I had the Mustang I amp for awhile and recently got into it. I took a look at Ableton and decided that it wasn't for me. I'm interested in recording and creating your own own tracks and such. Are there any good freeware programs for doing such and what options do I have as far as programs being used to record from your guitar and creating your own music?

Thanks

Hi!

I also quickly gave up on the included recoding software. WAY too complicated for me

I use this instead:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Just be sure to select your mustang as recoding device, press record and away you go.

Best Regards,
Madsen

Audacity is mainly an audio editing programme, but you certainly can do some simple recording with it.

Good FREE multi-track recording software is hard to find. A lot of people like and use Reaper, which is shareware but doesn't expire - it can be pretty complicated too though.

Most of the major music recording software makers - Cakewalk, Steinberg, Presonus, Avid/Pro Tools etc etc - do 'starter' versions of their software with reduced features, but also a reduced price.

To be honest, once you step up from something like Audacity to a full computer based multi-tracker, there is likely to be a lot to learn - if you want the extra features, you have to wear the extra time spent learning how to use them !

The thing I love about Audacity is that you can literally use it like a computerized version of an old tape deck recorder. Just plug in and hit record. Couldn't be more simple.

But wait, there's more.... You can multi track, edit, master, filter, compress, add effects, manipulate wave forms, time shift, cut & paste tracks, render to any type of audio file, and probably a lot more stuff that I never even use.

Sure it's not as sophisticated as the premier software that costs $100s - $1000s. And it lacks some features (perticularly drum sequencing/programing). But its easy to use and it works! It's served my basic home recording needs for about 10 years now. I've trialed many other DAWS, and unless I'm going to put together a semi-pro or pro level studio, I just don't see myself needing more than what Audacity has to offer for free.

That is EXACTLY why I use it. Don't need any more than "record" at the moment 8)

Just found out today about the USB gain in Fuse and on the amp itself. You might want to turn that up a bit. My default recording volume was pretty low.

So, Audacity is pretty good at allowing you to record music. Since I have a Mustang I amp, what kind of cable do I need to connect from the amp to guitar to laptop or do I have to purchase a audio interface?

Plug guitar into amp like normal. Use the USB cord that came with the Mustang amp and connect that from the amp to the computer. That's it.

Once you have Audacity installed goto Edit --> Preferences --> Devices.
Under Recording Device you should be able to select "Mustang Amplifier" or something similar.

Unfortunately, the Mustangs are input only devices so you have to select something else for the playback device (like computer speakers). You could run a 1/8 inch speaker cord from the computer line out to the Mustang Aux In and monitor through the amp like that. That's what I do.

After you get those couple basic things set up, just click the red button and start jammin!

I read on the AudoacityManual web page that if I brought 1/4-1/8 adapter, plug it into the computer line input and then connecting the guitar to the adapter using the cable isn't a smart move it would create a strong heavy riff from the back of the computer and with the slightest tug can damage the soundcard. However, if I wanted to get a audio interface to connect to USB port of the computer, which ones should I look into?

I'd be more worried about snapping off the plastic inserts where you plug cords into the Mustang amp. My headphone jack has broken twice and my USB input jack is a little bent. Cheap plastic materials is obviously one way Fender keeps the prices down on these amps. I've never had a problem with my soundcard jack and I constantly plug/unplug cords to it.

As for a USB audio interface... I don't have much experience with them so I can't recommend one... but you don't need one to record from your Mustang amp. The Mustang IS the interface (see my previous post).

guitar --> Mustang --USB--> computer --> Audacity

Be sure to install the ASIO driver first

I already have the ASIO driver installed. Anyone tried using USB microphones to record from the guitars for recording?

As mentioned by others here, the Mustang will function as the audio interface. However it is an input-only device. That means you'll have to use your computer's soundcard or another source to hear what you've recorded.

A simple solution is to run an 1/8" aux cable from the headphone output on your soundcard to the aux input on the amp. That way, whatever comes out of the computer will play through the amp.

Hello. I'm doing something wrong. Audacity isn't recognizing my system.

Help appreciated.

Hey Gary,

Make sure the amp is connected and powered on before you open Audacity. It should show your amp as an input device in the audio preferences.
