As the headline asks, does it? I know I could try just plugging in another cab to test another few speaker to see if I like the sound but nothing like hearing it in your actual combo. I've always put in different speakers in all my amps to get that sound I love. I prefer Jensen speakers, personally and loved the sound the Jensen Jet Electric Lightning had in my Fender Super Sonic 60.

I noticed there is a dot of clear glue on each of the screws holding the Celestion G12 in the MIII. If these are missing or broken, will my warranty be voided if I need repairs? The MIII being a "computer" as opposed to a circuit board with tubes like my other amps, I'm guessing I won't be able to get service just anywhere and will have to send to factory. I just don't want my $300 to go down the drain the second I unscrew the stock speaker :(

As long as your new speaker matches the specs (8ohm, 100watts, etc.) as the stock one, should it matter??

Thanks!

Universal corporate policy. If you sneeze on the amp, you void the warranty.

Seriously, though, you'll probably void your warranty the moment you touch a screwdriver to the first screw on the back of the amp just to take the back cover off...much less when you take the stock speaker out.

Oh well. I guess I'll leave the Celestion in until the warranty is up. The MIII being so "computer" is bothersome as an amp. I'm used to owning tube amps and used ones at that, changing speakers to something that suits my needs just seems like part of equipment ownership!

Thanks!

Yeah, it's unfortunate. I've got a Mustang I, and so for $100 I went ahead and voided the warranty to hook the thing up to a decent speaker...and it was WELL worth it in that case. However, at $300, it's not such an easy decision. The Celestion that ships with the MIII is a decent speaker...I can understand it may not be your first choice, but it could be a lot worse!

Hey Guys,

Any kind of service or modification performed by anyone other than a fender authorized tech will void the warranty.

I think you missed part of the OP...there's glue on the screws mounting the speaker, so it will be obvious if the screws have been removed...or even loosened, for that matter!

Like Loren said,
Have the authorised Fender Tech put in the Jensen the speaker for you.

Loren, Just so I'm clear. So your saying that changing the speaker does not void the warranty, as long as a "Fender Authorized technician" does the work? Is that correct?
Thanks.

Have you let the original speaker break in yet. It is a GOOD speaker made for the modeling or rather the models are made for it. Or have you tried the other speak cabs with specific amp models, I like the 4x12 Marshall for the Bassman for instance. Lot cheaper and a lot easier than swapping out speakers just to swap them out.

Hi pathtaker,

I am looking into your question regarding the warranty issue. I should have some clarification in the next 1-2 days. Can you please send me an email to the address below? And I can more easily respond to you that way. Thanks.

Hi Guys,

Ok. Here is the official word on the Fender Mustang III & IV speaker replacement question. Thanks for your patience.

"The speakers installed in the Mustang Series combo amplifiers are
designed to be voiced specifically for each model. We recommend
replacing defective speakers with the exact same speaker, which may
be obtained from your Fender Dealer.

If a speaker is changed to a different type there are specifications to
keep in mind. The impedance (ohms) and power handling (wattage)
must match exactly between the original and replacement speakers.
In Mustang amplifiers there is also a third wire that is attached to the
frame of the speaker that must be attached to the frame of the
replacement as well – if this is not done properly, the performance
of the power amp may be affected.

There are speakers on the market that have the negative terminal
common with the frame of the speaker – these speakers CANNOT
be used in a Mustang amplifier, as this will result in damage to the
power amp.

Any deviance from stated specifications or improper
installation of the speaker (especially pertaining to the
attachment and proper grounding of the third speaker wire)
will void the amplifier’s warranty."
