I will preface this question with the observation that I am pretty computer illiterate and just learning to play guitar. So, hopefully this makes sense.

I have the Mustang I and have been playing around with the software that came with it. I have been having the problem with the Asio driver that apparently is not uncommon--I cannot get sound when I use that driver with the Ableton software or with AmpliTube. Frankly, I have reached the level of my ability to try to figure the problem out, and I'm afraid if I keep playing around with things I'm going to screw something else up. So I'm basically thinking of giving up on using Asio.

My questions are these:

(1) For the Abletone software, which is fun to play with while I try to learn how to play (record what I'm practicing and then listen to how bad it is), am I really missing anything by not using the Asio driver, and instead using the driver that the software or computer defaults to? Needless to say, the only thing I'm doing now is the most basic of the basic, but I am curious about what, if anything, I'm giving up.

(2) For the AmpliTube software, I get a pretty significant delay when I don't use the Asio driver. It is long enough that the software really not usable. Am I losing anything by just giving up on AmpliTube relative to playing through the amp with the Fuse software. Because I haven't been able to play around with AmpliTube, I haven't been able to understand what it really does, other than what I've read describing it at a high level.

Again, I'm not trying to do anything fancy, but I'm also the kind of guy who hates to give up too many features on these types of things even if I probably will never use them.

Thanks. The amp is a lot of fun, and I'm having a great time learning guitar!

Let's see what I can do with this.

1. ASIO stands for Audio Stream Input/Output.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Stream_Input/Output
I don't really think you're missing anything if all you're doing is recording yourself. But most of the people I talk to say that when using ASIO for this, it disables the Windows sounds completely, so you can't hear the playback from Ableton. Perhaps your way is better. Then you can sync after the fact.

2. The only real way to use AmpliTube is with the ASIO and some kind of direct input. Even with the Mustang amplifier, there was still a slight delay. I've moved to using a direct Guitar/USB interface and it's virtually latency free.
To answer what AmpliTube does....it basically turns your computer INTO AN AMP. No, seriously. I downloaded AmpliTube 3.7 Free and bought a number of actual amp models from their Custom Shop...like Orange amps. Got the Fender amps that came with my Mustang too. And also picked up a Mesa Triple-Rectifier amp channel, a Peavey 5150 amp channel, and a Marshall JCM800 and JCM900 while I was at it. They're all VERY accurate and emulate valve amps like no other, in my opinion.

What I'd like to figure out is how to use AmpliTube's output to feed into Ableton's record interface so I can use those amp models to record with, all in a virtual environment.

Can you not run it as a VST plugin in Ableton? I seem to recall doing that in Sonar LE.

PITA

Yes indeed you can run Amplitude as a VST plug-in inside Abelton, or any other software recording programme (DAW) that supports VSTs - Sonar, Cubase, ete etc.

In fact that is probably the most normal and common way of using Amplitube. Doing it that way, you can record your guitar in Abelton 'dry', that is without any particular amp model applied, and then by inserting the Amplitude VST on the recorded track, you can try a whole raft of different amp sounds and settings without affecting the recorded track until you are happy and ready to commit to your preferred tone.

If you use Amplitude in stand alone mode outside Abelton, and then record its output into Abelton :
- a, that is potentially messy connection wise; and
- b, your recorded guitar sound will be fixed at whatever Amplitude was set to, with no possibility of changing it within Abelton or trying other tones, thus missing out on much of the power and flexibility of the VST plug-in technology.

I don't agree with that advice. Sometimes an FX can effect the way you pick a note, and/or the timing playing chords. I record using DAW, such as Ablelton, and stand-alones recorder and always use an effect (record 'wet') or amp patch.

BTW, IK Media has 'new' free AmpliTube demo download http://www.ikmultimedia.com/amplitubefree/features/, it has the same Fender amp models and many more amp models.

Of course, if you are really certain that the Amplitude tone you are using is the one you want, then recording the sound 'wet', with the amp model and effects locked in, is fine.

But I still maintain that much of the power of software like Amplitude, with the ability to run as a VST plugin, is that it allows you to record dry and then experiment afterwards, especially if you are not sure what tone you are after and how it will sit in the mix.

Hey Guys,

Kilgore - The difference between the built in Direct X/MME driver and ASIO is that the ASIO driver bypasses lots of unnecessary software channels and is a straight path between the USB input and the software. That's why you get more latency when using the built in driver.

If you're having trouble setting up ASIO you should contact us directly. I"m sure we can get you going.
