I have had a Mustang 1 for about 6 months and I have no complaints. Home use only - master volume never higher than 4. I usually play along with 40 or so Pandora stations that I run through the aux input using a Logitech Squeezebox. I know that sounds a little different, but it never gets boring and it's a good way to use a lot of different settings and actually learn a lot of songs. Question - Would switching to a Mustang 2 result in better tone, improved punch, and better presence at the same volume? Any downside to the switch? I don't want to change just for the sake of trying something new if there's no audible benefit. Advice and opinions appreciated. Thanks.

You're going to get an extra 4" of speaker and twice the wattage, so more clean room. It won't be that much louder, but the bigger speaker will give you more oomph if you want it, as will the slightly larger cabinet. The only way you can be sure is to go to a local store with one and demo it. I think that's all anyone can really tell you.

I have an MI and an MII. I have A-B'ed them and for sure the MII sounds much better to my ear. It has a much fuller sound. The 12" speaker makes a big difference. The MI, with the 8" speaker, isn't bad by any means, but the MII will give you a fuller sound with more bottom end.

I also have a MI and a MII. I confirm 100% of what jcwillow777 wrote.

So different is taste ... I have both, and to my ear especialy in low volume settings the Mustang I sounds better than the II, somewhat fresher, don't know how to describe this subjective impression. Of course it depends on the preset you choose, but in playing low volume even some of the high-gain presets sound better to me on the small one. I have to confess that I am not a fan of too much bass from the guitar and that I got the Mustang1 first so that I maybe got used to its sound and took it for "the real one".

I agree with Frente,i have the mustang I and played my uncles mustang II,the MI sounds better at low volumes and has a smoother frequency response then the MII,the MI also sounds better with the high gain amp models even at higher volumes.

The MII has more of a mid range peak from it's 12" speaker and makes the high gain models sound bad in my opinion, when i heard these models on my uncles MII i really did not like them at all but i do like the high gain models on my MI(american 90's and metal 2000).

The clean fender models and overdrive tones do sound good on the mustang II at lower and higher volumes and can sound better then the same clean models that are on the mustang I but these models also sound good on the MI.

If you do not care for the high gain models and do not play metal then you might like the MII better.

In view of the latest two posts I want to add that my opinion in favour of the MII is certainly based on the fact that I use much more clean settings than high gain.

Me too Philippe. But it was quite a fun playing around with the High-Gain Modells and I still have to laugh remembering my band-mate's faces when I showed them the M1 the first time with the Metal-2000 Preset :))

The needed volume takes its toll: in big rooms or outside the 12" Speaker and the additional 20 W of the M2 do their work pretty well. I've read the hint of an experienced player in another forum to cut the back of the M2 open like on the bigger models to sound even better with clean and chrunchy sounds. But that's OT.

The thread-starter asked for low-noise, inhouse sound. And there I really prefer the M1.

I love my MII but I also really miss that little MI. There's something about that little guy's tone - so spunky for its size and wattage. For a while, I used it with an 8 piece horn band and it kept up(!!) but I knew that it was probably pretty hard on it which is why I got the MII. If I don't get something like that Vox Lil' Night Train Set, I'll definitely get another MI... and likely mod the crap out of it too.
