Hello,

i am new to playing guitar and i bought a Mustang iV.

Now, i have a questions a hopefully anybody can help me:

Because i am a beginner, i don't know what every setting is (Reverb, Effects, Treble, Delay, etc...).

I start playing around and look what every knob is for.
I choose a Preset (Number 02 "Intro Clean" for example).
Then i press "Reverb" or "Delay" or "Amp" and then i can change some settings.

But at the end, i dont want to change something at the pre-configured Amps/Presets...

So is it possible to change something at the pre-configured Amps/Presets and overwrite it, so it ist lost?

I have the fear, that i can destroy some of the Amps/Presets because of my testing with the knobs and the buttons...

Or don't i have to worry about playing around with the settings, because i can't overwrite the Amps/Presets (because i find a Seeting called "empty" and thats for user-saving)?

Thanks for helping!

Max

Welcome!

If I am understanding you correctly, you can change the settings on the amp as much as you wish. Until you press the "SAVE" button, nothing will change on the amp.

Similar rules apply to FUSE...you can make changes and they are temporary until you press "SAVE". With FUSE, you can easily create new presets, and load them onto the amp. There are already numerous threads on this topic...search and enjoy!

Have fun...

And...there are ways to get the original presets loaded in case you accidentally change them. They have been posted online...

Hey Max,

Welcome to the Fender forums.

The Mustang IV has 100 preset slots total. You must overwrite one of the existing slots to save a new preset. There's no way around that. You can, however, restore the presets back to factory settings by booting the amp while holding the EXIT button. That's your safeguard in case you make some changes you wish you hadn't.

MaxMuster, why did you buy a mustang IV if you are a beginner? I think it may be too much for you at this stage, the mustang I or II would have been a better choice for a beginner in my opinion.

Who cares? It's a better all-around usage amp, for practice AND for gigging. Sure, it's got a slightly higher learning curve than the M1 and M2, but the Mustang amp has a fairly steep learning curve to begin with. I certainly wouldn't call them "beginner" amps by any means. To get them to sound really good, it takes a lot of know-how and experience, especially when you dive into the depths of FUSE. Everyone was a beginner once, but we all don't have to get stuck with some crappy 10-watt clone-amp from an unknown company as a first amp, do we? Let him enjoy what could very well be a bad-ass amp without second-guessing him.

To the OP, there's a lot to learn, but you have a very good amp to learn on. Just take your time, learn what each knob does and get used to the basics of the amp before you start trying to edit all the presets and what-not. And definitely learn what you're doing before you try using FUSE (even though you're going to want to at some point). Congratulations on your first amp being a Fender Mustang IV.

How could you make a statement like that? You got to be out of your mind? Do you think a beginner also should start out with a $2000 gibson les paul and a marshall stack?

You have to work your way up through years of practice and getting to be a better player before you get to that higher level as a musician to appreciate a better guitar or amp in my opinion.

He's not on a $4,000 Gibson and a $3,000 Marshall stack. He bought a $400 solid-state amp.

And I bought the Mustang II as my first real amp and I like it more now about a year later than I did when I first bought it, because I learned a lot about amp tone from it. I could have done the same with the Mustang IV. It's the same amp, basically, only more powerful. I had to "upgrade" to the Mustang V, which cost me more money in the long run than I would have needed if I had done like the OP and got the Mustang IV from the start.

All I'm really saying is, give the dude props for having something better than a crappy amp. Not everyone in the world has to drive around drunk and get into an accident and kill someone before they realize that drinking and driving is stupid. Not all life lessons have to be learned the hard way. The same applies to musicianship and gear here.

Thanks a lot for the answers!

Now, i know that i can reset everything to factory-setting while holding EXIT and turn ON the amp, i feel better when playing around with the knobs.
Beside that, i never press the save button, so i dont overwrite something at the moment...

Why i bought a Mustang IV and not a Mustang I or II?

The answer is simple:
I heared the sound of the Mustangs I & II & III & IV.
And i dont like the Sound of the I & II.
The sound of the III is okay for me, but i like the sound of the IV.

Beside that, i tought it is better to start with an amp which has a good sound and many functions.
I dont want to buy a new amp in 6 month, i want to buy one time and have fun with that for a long time.

And it only cost 370 Euro, so that is not that much that i have to think about the price...

Greetings,
Max
