Hi everyone!

Was just looking for some advice/suggestions from the community/fender representatives regarding my Mustang 2.

I picked a unit a week or so ago after hearing so many good things about it and was having a blast with it until yesterday evening. I started hearing some crackling noise on my headphones when I shifted. I pulled out headphone cord and found that the piece of plastic ring/piece for the jack had broken off. I'm totally choked and was wondering if anyone can suggest some avenues to get this thing fixed. :(

The amp still works fine otherwise but I can't play too much without my headphones plugged in.

Is this something that I can take to a repair shop? Does Fender provide parts for this?

Please let me know! HALP! :(

If you purchased the amp new, then repairs should be under warranty.

Find a service center:
http://www.fender.com/dealers/service_centers.php

These Mustangs have great sound and features, but sadly weren't built very well. I know when my Mustang III breaks, it'll basically be trash, since I bought it used and don't have a warranty. But I'll try to be careful and hope that doesn't happen...

If you have the means, I'd suggest buying a backup amp that has real quality parts, especially jacks, potentiometers and switches.

The Fender 5 year warranty is transferable. Have the previous owner sign over the original receipt to you.

Thanks MW - I called the local service center and they said they'll be able to take a look at it. The jack seems to be made of some flimsy material - I wish they'd have used the larger sized jacks for the headphones.

I'm pretty sure all of us do, mate. 1/4" Headphones jack for the win!

Funny I should log on and see this thread. My blankety blank headphone jack just broke for the second time since I bought the amp 9 months ago. Same thing, little cheap plastic ring snapped off. I'm very perturbed by this but not at all surprised. When it came back from the shop the first time I made a conscious effort to always take care when plugging/unplugging my cords. Despite my effort, it didn't take long for the USB plug to bend inside the housing. I really thought it would be the next thing to snap off. But, as FFXI puts it, "1/4 headphone jack for the win!"

Back to the shop I guess. Sure am glad for the 5 year warranty. But man, I use my headphnes a lot, how many more times am I gonna have to send this thing in for the same problem? :(

2nd time already?? that's terrible! I hope a fender rep will notice this and send word to their dev team to get it fixed. I'm particularly worried because I prefer to play my amp with headphones. It would be a waste of a perfectly fine amp.

I lost the USB plug on my very first amp within a week of getting it, but I got the amp replaced by Musicians Friend under their 30-day policy, so that was nice. Ever since then, I'm extremely careful when plugging in the USB or headphones!! Almost a year and so far so good, though I don't use either jack that often!

Took the amp to a certified service center and just waiting to hear back from them on whether it's covered by the warranty (thanks again MW). I think I'll have to get a little extension for the jack to avoid additional stress on that little plastic collar... maybe one for the USB jack too - ugh. I guess most people don't play with headphones when they use their amps eh?

I just picked up yet another amp, but decided to go with a line 6 instead of an equivalent Mustang model. The Spider IV is a little harder to get used to, but at least I don't have to worry about the jacks :P

I think plastic collar fell out too, either that or it's slanted now. But it's my fault :) I was walking to my computer on the other side of the room and let's just say my Mustang took the walk with me, hehe. Still works fine though.

+1 Just broke my $$@$# headphone jack. I use it probably 90% of the time since I live in an apartment! I super glued the plastic collar back on, but now the plug won't seat right... NOT HAPPY FENDER...

Yup, pretty much what I tried to do with mine. Find an authorized dealer and have them take care of it. Took mine over a month to get it back to me.

It's a pain in the butt - please make headphone jacks for durable Fender! your customers will love you for it!

To try and minimise the risk of this happening, after the many problems noted on this forum about the cheapness and weakness of these connectors, I keep a short USB extension lead - about 6 inches long - permanently plugged into the amp's USB socket, and I plug and unplug my USB cable into the end of that extension, instead of using the socket on the amp.

If you tape the extension lead in place on the top or side of the amp, there is no stress at all on the on-amp socket.

I'm sure you could do the same with a short extension lead and the headphone socket. You could even end up with a 1/4 inch connection to plug into if you find the right lead.

I was thinking about doing this, but I think the amp would mute itself (redirect output to "headphones") after having something plugged into the jack. Haven't tried this yet, but if anyone can confirm, that would be a be help :)

Sadly, on reflection I think you right. The extension lead trick works for the USB socket, but if you plug an extension lead into the headphone out, it will mute the amp speaker.

I guess if you only ever play through headphones it might be an option, or might at least reduce the number of times you use the on-amp connector, but probably not practical as a long term solution.
