I have been looking at amps. I didn't really want like a gig amp, just a bigger one to practice on.

So.....

What would be the sound difference between the Mustang III and IV?

The Mustang III is $399.99 and the Mustang IV is $699.99. I don't want to spend an extra $300 just for nothing.

Any advice/suggestions?

Lets see, to start with, the IV is stereo. Then it has an extra 12 inch speaker. A bigger cab of course as well. I have the III and love it though... I think you can't go wrong with these amps!

Wow, they went up! I have an MIII and MIV and I love them both. My MIII was $300 and my MIV was $500. Glad I got mine when I did.

The only other thing not mentioned is that the MIV is 150 watts, the MIII is 100 watts. I have used both to gig with and they hold their own. I do like the MIV better in a live setting though. The added 12" speaker gives it more bottom end, which I like, and a lot fuller sound. The stereo effect is really hard to hear live since the speakers are so close together, but with headphones they sound cool. But then the MIII can have stereo effects when using headphones too.

If you aren't gonna play live, the MIII will be just fine. I do like having the FX loop, which is available on the MIII - MV, but not on the MI and MII. I use mine for a volume pedal, boost and Supa-Trem. If you choose to use a volume pedal in the FX loop, you need a low-Z pedal.

It should be noted, however, that 150-watts for the Mustang IV is almost mis-information. It's actually 150 TOTAL watts, or 75-watts PER SIDE, so it would probably get no louder than the Mustang III's 100-watts. Each speaker is only going to get, at most, 75 watts. But since you have two speakers, you probably won't notice the difference anyway. It'll still be loud.

I've been gigging my MIII occasionally, over the past 5 months or so. I got mine, new, for $270.00 out the door. Guess Fender upped the price? For my uses (and my budget right now) the Mustang has been great. I have managed to squeeze some great tones out of it that sound every bit as good as the custom tube amp our other guitarist uses. At multiple recent gigs, people have made it a point to comment on how good the guitars sound. Although I have heard some of the dreaded "fizz" in my amp, I haven't been overly concerned about it in my usage. You can read all about the Mustang "fizz" on the forum.

I have both the Mustang III and IV. On stage, I use the IV as it has a fuller overall sound and cuts through the mix a bit better. I use the Mustang III as a backup with all of my presets indentical on each and will quite often use it at rehearsals.

Depending on what you intend using the amp for, if you have the extra dollars, I would advise you to go for the Mustang IV.

In Australia, the Mustang III goes for $500 and the Mustang IV for about $750.

Which ever way you choose to go, believe me, either of these amps is way loud enough.

These are "MSRP prices". Actual ones are $300 and $500.
