It's $300 and on the "do not repair" list from what I understand. Which means that if Fender chooses to take it on, they just replace it.

This is in the consumer product disposable appliance price range. Think ipod, smart phone, $100 microwave, or toaster. They're good for a 2-3 years sales span; then if they go, these are built for replacement, not repair. They are quickly replaced with new models as basic technology moves the bar every 18 months or so. If you use these for gigging, I'd get the extended warranty, based on the reported problems with cheap connectors and other things liable to fail under pro use, and upgrade to new models as they become available, just as you'd put an ipod or cheap laptop on a replacement cycle. For really serious giggers, if these are important to you buy two, so you're not shut down when something inevitably goes in for factory replacement, which could take weeks.

For longevity, buy a computer-free twin or bassman and skip the built-in obsolecent-prone gew-gaws. These are best handled as external appliances, if you want your basic amp to have long legs. Otherwise, if you don't mind built-in shortened product lifecycles, get the latest whatever and plan on frequent replacements for the latest and greatest. Depends on what you are looking for.

What an interesting subject. Hmm, let me see......................My Sunn alpha 12r, which I got when solid state was a dirty word in guitar circles back in 1979, it has an overdrive on it that gives it cool unique solid state roar. It sounds great clean as well. Tube amps were cool back then as today. Solid state has come a long way in guitar amps, and other products. I don't see it going away. Neither will analog tube technology. My Sunn tranny amp is now a collectors item. I also have five tube amps, four being Fenders. I believe these days there are solid state snobs, who think they are going to take over the world with semiconductors! I'm enjoying both technologies and I hate it when others try to predict the future. If it is not around it probably means it was junk to start out with.

There won't be any amplifiers in the future. We'll all be inter-connected Borgs - we'll just 'think' music to each other.

I have a '64 Gretsch Tennessean that I generally play through a '95 Fender Blues Deluxe ( I have a couple of other lower power amps & a couple of Danelectro and Epiphone guitars ). I expect those to last and are worth repair $$$. I'm lovin' the Mustang V.....I just don't really expect it to last as long as my main set-up. In the meantime, it's surpassed my expectations by a great deal.

I agree, would it make any sense to build a high-quality smart phone that's designed to last decades? Technology moves fast, by the time this one breaks, I'll want the new model.

I read many time that the dsp inside the mustang is already pushed to the max.
This little chip has shurely already dropped down its price, and one day or the other a better version will be available at an affordable price.

That day we will get a new mustang with new wistle and bells, at nearly the same price we pay actual model... many of us will upgrade to the new one because of this or that feature.

This is ok, the digital is trying to fill the gap with the tube and one day or the other they will sound exactly the same, but digital will have so much more options to offer...

As for realiability, many tube amp last decades, but in the short term a digital amp can face touring really well: it is ligheter and has less "delicate" parts!

Never even gave it a thought. I bought it for TODAY. By the time it's obsolete, I'll have bought a new one with an even better feature set. And, in 40 years from now, heck, I'll be 100 and it will be the least of my worries. LOL

But now that you mention it, I guess i should be buying a ton of 1/4" to 1/8" adapters so i can still keep connecting my old low tech vintage amps to the 'modern' standard found in all that high tech, hand held, mp3 playing, smartphone influenced sound equipment.

Not to worry, I figure in 40 years I won't need an amp. I'll just broadcast my guitar directly to my hearing aid via my new Mustang Pocket Pod.

While the USB interface many become obsolete, I can still buy Serial (COM) and Parallel (LPT) ports - technology that dates from the 70s, if not earlier - that will work with todays computers. The trouble is will the software run on tomorrows computers? I have come across many occasions where an old program (8/16 bit) will not run under Windows-7, 64-bit.
