Hi All,

First time poster here...

I have just started to play guitar again after around 10 years and I am looking for a small amp to use for home only. Playing at night and also some recording to Garage band.

After reading many forum posts and reviews I decided that the Fender Mustang Range was best suited... I got a Mustang II last week and although it sounds pretty good with minimal tweaking in Fuse it is really too loud to use when the family are in bed.

If I set the volume around 1 1/2 then its OK to 2 then its getting quite loud ... So I am now think at that volume i will never be using the full capacity of the 12" speaker and it would probably be wiser to use the smaller 20watts and 8" speaker instead.

I am unable to get to a music shop close by here so i can try... So what do you think? Would i see so much change in tone if I am only using such low volume with the Mustang II over the mustang I?

Thanks

You could always use head phones if the volume bothers your family and then you could keep the M2. I have the M1 and its loud enough for the house and for when I travel and without the Fuse I`m happy with the amp.

Thanks for the reply!!

How is the 8" speaker for the Mustang I and how loud do you usually set the master volume at home?

I will buy some headphones but thinking if it with for the mustang I then I can also invest in some good quality headphones.

Thanks

Well I guess if you're sure you'll never want to crank it passed 2 then you might as well trade it in and save $100.

I've got a Mustang III and one of the things I love about it is I can dial it down to whisper quiet and it still sounds decent. But on those occasions when the wife and kids are out of the house, I can crank it up and feel the air moving. Its a wonderful thing.

I've never played my Mustang I with the master volume above 5 at home, and that would still be too loud for when your kids are asleep.

I'm no expert but I doubt you'll notice any real loss of depth at such low volumes.

As has already been said, at low volume levels I don't think you are going to see much difference between the I and the II.

I would keep the MII and buy a good set of headphones.

+1

My headphones are SONY MDR-V500 Dynamic Stereo Monitoring Headphones. The best headphones I've ever purchased.

Yeah...if you are thinking about not waking the family with low speaker volumes...there really isn't a difference between the two...and your're better off with headphones for your own rockin' soul. As for home use without restrictions, they both get plenty loud.

My recommendation would be to tweak the channel volume if you're having a hard time dialing in the right volume with the master volume. In that sense, the channel volume is almost like a "fine tuning" control. That way you can keep your Mustang II.

I don't have any trouble getting decent tones out of my Mustang I at volumes that won't wake the wife and kids, BUT I think the 12" speaker would probably be preferable over the 8" speaker. I only use my Mustang as a practice amp, so I wasn't bothered by the 8" speaker (and besides, I put a speaker jack in it so I can use other cabs anyway!!). But if it were my only amp, I think I'd definitely want a 12" speaker.

For playing at lower volumes i would go with mustang I,if you like high gain metal tones the MI sounds better in my opinion then the MII,i have the MI and it sounds good with clean, overdrive and high gain tones.

I tried out my uncles MII and i did not like the high gain metal tones at all from this amp, there was too much midrange from the 12" speaker and made it honky and boxy sounding but the MI sounded much smoother without the mid range bump in the frequency response from it's 8" speaker.

The 12" speaker in the MII does not sound better to me if played at lower volumes compared to the MI,the MII may sound better on the clean amp models but not on the higher gain models.

If you like just clean tones then i would say the MII would be a good choice over the MI,i did like the clean and overdrive tones from the MII but anything high gain sucked in my opinion, that being said i did not get a chance to tweak the MII in the fuse software but i still think the 12" speaker in it is not voiced right for all of it's amp models, mainly the high gain models.

I set all knobs on 6, master volume included and the guitar volume never goes over 7. Its loud enough for the house and from what I`m told you can hear it outside.

Any amp need to have a minimum amount of volume (read: energy to move the speaker) to sound at its best. The II has a better speaker but below a certain amount of volume the I sound better than the II.

Also consider that to double 20W of sound the human hear need 80W, so 40W is just about 50% more than 20W in term of sound perception.

This may be a little off topic but i just have to mention about how good the Fender Vibro Champ Xd sounds,my uncle just bought one and he brought it to my house so i could hear it and it blew me away for a 5w tube amp with 16 amp model voicings.

This amp is most likely being closed out because sam ash, amazon and best buy are selling them for 149.99! Other music outlets have them for 199.99 and 239.00,my uncle got his amp from sam ash and i will be getting one soon.

I also have the mustang I and V but if i were to compare the Vibro Champ Xd to the mustang I the Vibro Champ Xd wins hands down! This amp does not have a headphone out or any user presets that you can save but the tone is just outstanding from this amp,the fender clean and overdrive tones are so good that i could just not stop playing this amp,the amp has soul and tube warmth that you just cannot get from the mustang I or II in my opinion, just try one out playing a strat or strat clone with a single coil in the neck position and you will just be amazed!

Most of the 16 amp voicings sound good and there is a acoustic guitar simulation that sounds very good with a electric guitar, there are also some high gain models for rock and metal tones that sound good but the fender amp models sound better to me,i could go on and on about this amp but just read the reviews of it for yourself, this is the best sounding amp i have ever heard for 149.00!

I almost forgot to mention that this amp also has effects and many sound very good.
