Hi All,

Are there known issues with the headphone volume on the Mustang I?

I recently purchased a Mustang 1 to use for practice with an '76 strat (pickups & everything else are original) and the the volume is impossibly low with headphones. In fact, it appears that the MOD effect level affects the volume directly. No fx, almost no volume. Increase fx levels and the volume goes up with them. Master/Volume/Gain can be turnedto max and the volume is still too low to be usable. But if I move the MOD knob and the fx preset for that is High, I can blow my eardrums out. Makes wearing headphones not only annoying, but physically dangerous.

So basically the amp is unusable with headphones unless I'm willing to be seriously burdened by cheesy sound effects. I should mention that it worked a few weeks ago (I'm pretty sure because I know I enjoyed the amp for a few weeks) and no hardware has changed. Also, the speaker volume is consistent as expected.

I have done a factory reset, reinstalled the 1.8 firmware, messed around with the effects levels (as noted above) and nothing works. I do notice that the MASTER pot seems to cut in and out as I turn it, but only when using headphones, not speaker, so I suspect this is not purely mechanical.

Any ideas? Is this expected? Is this amp a dud?

Thanks - Doug

Have you tried other sets of headphones, Doug. Some require lots of oomph from the headphone amp while some require very little.

If your Master volume pot causes the audio to cut in and out, you shouldn't be surprised that the headphone volume is low or even nonexistent. Obviously something is wrong. You need to have it checked out by a tech.

Ha! I found it. The problem turned out to be the wire to the headphones... This is a pair of Bose headphones meant for a portable device but it has an extension wire. I took that wire out of the equation and found out it works. Of course, now I only have a 1 ft wire for these headphones... leaves me a bit close to the amp :)

But I can replace that. I'm pretty sure that the reason it went bad has something to do with the words I just heard: "Oh. that wire? Oh yeah... that got caught up in the vacuum the other day". Sheesh.

Thanks everyone for the help. And it did help!

I have the M1 and it works fine with the Bose headphones that I have.

I'm glad it was something as simple as the cord to the headphones.
