Fret buzz? When I first started using DSP modelers, I noticed that low action and fret buzz will produce all sorts of nasty noises metallic noises and artifacts. Is there any fret buzz involved here???

I don't think there can be because it also happens on the aux input and my iPod doesn't have any frets to buzz

That's what happens when you don't really read the original post - like me.
I'm pretty much convinced that it's the power amp section that went kablooey.
Sorry dude, but the guy/gal who sold it to you may have played it too loud one too many times.

O.

uh oh. You are projecting your short-comings on me! Actually, as I do with all threads, I thoroughly read through this thread before replying. While thoroughly reading through this the thread, I remembered I had a similar problem that was caused by fret buzz via low action. Since action and fret buzz weren't mentioned, I thought I'd mention it to help out!

FYI, I've read a bunch of your posts here on the forum, excellent posts! Thank you for your excellent contributions to the forum!

I was actually making fun of myself too as I often miss certain aspects of the original post. The thing is I just can see no way that fret buzz can cause the kind of popping and crackling sound that the OP is talking about. Fret buzz is very distinct and does not sound like a pop unless... the strings are so low they're making momentary contact with one of the pickups' pole pieces but the pickups would have to be raised pretty high though. Even then it still wouldn't truly sound like an electronic pop and it definitely wouldn't crackle.

Well it's 2 weeks since I contacted Fender support in the UK by email and I still haven't had any response at all

I have a spare 16 ohm speaker. I guess that should be fine. I will try the headphone idea first.

Thanks!

Brossarb,
If you were responding to jwoertz, I think he was more concerned about using a 16 ohm speaker with your mustang. I wouldn't recommend that either but headphones in the headphone jack should be fine.

16 ohm speakers are safe with any solid state power amp. Maybe not optimal but certainly safe. The danger is in heading in the other direction. If you run into a 2 ohm load from an output stage that isn't designed for that then you are asking for trouble as the amp is seeing something close to a short circuit. Cheap amps won't like that at all.

Valve amps are much fussier but that's not relevant here.

Thanks.

Hey Bossarb,

I apologize for the delay. There are no Fender authorized service centers in the UK. You may have to give U.S. Consumer Relations a call. You'll likely have to ship your amp here to get it serviced.

True. I was just concerned about volume reduction because of the 16 ohm impedance and the fact that it's likely not a very sturdy power section.
By the way, does it still crackle when using headphones?

No it doesn't. So it must be something to do with the power amp stage of the unit. But it isn't the speaker itself. If Fender UK won't reply to me then I guess I will have to take it apart myself and see if there are any obvious problems.

This was a used amp right? Well, if it were mine, it'd already be apart on my workbench and I'd be trying to figure out a way to use a different power amp unit on it (in the original cabinet) or take the guts out completely and use it just as a preamp or something wacky like that. Hmmm...

Thanks Loren. I didn't realise that I lived in such a small and isolated country!

I think the cost of shipping would be as much as the value of the amp, sadly.

If it was 1 April I'd be laughing at this, but since it isn't, I'd have to say that it's one of the most disturbing posts I've seen in a long time.

Doesn't pay to be a non-US Fender customer - greatly reduced warranties, higher prices AND, it would appear, no official service network.

I'm told on another forum (not Fender) that there IS a good Fender service centre in the UK and I've been given the email address of someone to contact. I will take a look inside the amp first to see if there are any obvious bad solder joints.

But I agree with you depepat, it is bizarre that a music market as important as the UK (we buy a lot of gear for a smallish country) doesn't seem to be well supported...
