So, as the title says, I'm considering buying the mustang V next week and I need some help from anyone with experience with these amps. I have an extreme amount of pedals that I use in my setup. (I know this amp has on board stuff, but I mostly want this amp for the modeling, to use it basically as an amp/distortion selector.) In my rig I have two distortion pedals. A DS-1 and a TS808.
1) Will these pedals sound good with this amp? I know that's a relative issue, but we all know what crap sounds like. Do they react the same sort of way that other solid state amps do?
2) Will driving the input of this amp harm it? I'd imagine that the guys at Fender considered that, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
So, these pedals with this amp would no longer be used as "channels" so to speak but rather as some tone shaping/gain shaping sort of tools...in a perfect world. I just don't think I could part with, at least, the Tubescreamer.

Thank you in advance,

Curtis

The M5 is going to react to pedals the same way that any other Mustang will. Some will sound ok, but others won't. Very few of the amp models will take to being driven (the Marshall JCM800 should be ok). But the amp really works best on its own, maybe just a wah pedal put on...possibly an EQ as well. I'd stay away from any kind of heavy digital distortion effects pedals. Since I've got the Mustang 2 and 5, my pedals have gone back into their boxes and I hardly ever pull them out. There's just no need.

These amps aren't made to accept a bunch of pedals - they're intended to stand alone. I also own the Mustang II and the Mustang V and I never use any pedals with either of them - there's no point in it. You'd have to neuter each preset to make it work. Best just grab a decent tube amp and stick to your old ways.

Agree with the previous replies. You don't need them. I tried them at first but found the onboard effects are that good. You can either get the overdrive you are using your pedals for by dialing up the gain on each amp which gives you the tube overdrive the pedals are trying to replicate or use the overdrive stompbox which has the eq you need to dial in a TS type OD or a transparent OD. The compressors also make good boost pedals. With the 4 button switch and the 2 button working together I can get everything I need at practice/jams or actual gigs where I have used them. I have the M3 with the EXP-1 pedal on order. And no trying to push the front end doesn't work here, but you have plenty of control to get that effect.

Don't get us wrong, you CAN use them but watch your gain and put some time in just dialing in presets and I think you'll get what you want without having to lug your pedal board around.

BTW I mostly gig with a DRRI using a pedalboard with a Barber TonePress, ZenDrive, OCD, Green Rhino, Fulltone Fatboost, HardWire Delay, Dano Chorus, Sonic Stomp.
