I killed the hissing sound completely with Master volume, volume and guitar volume tweaks. Several folks suggested that I use the noise gate to do the same so, that is another solution. With the volume adjustments I got good volume and a totally clean sound - very nice. BTW, sometimes the Master volume would be set quite high and the amp volume low with the guitar volume midway. More then plenty of volume for bedroom playing.

Yes, it's varies depending on amp, gain, modeled volume, etc. The amount of hiss on the Princeton seems to be affected mostly by model volume. Gain up to 5 only adds a minor amount. Other amp models react differently.

The hiss comes mostly from the modeling, and to a much lesser degree from the actual amplification. To check the hiss from the actual amplifier, I hooked an unconnected cable to the FX return. There's some hiss also at volume 1, but it only becomes more pronounced at 6-7.

The hiss seems acceptable when the modeling isn't involved, but I do wonder why it isn't HiFi quiet as baseline.

Hi Guys,

So, with the Fender Mustang III-V amps, the modeling is always on. In regard to noise/hiss, it will likely vary depending upon what model is selected, what effects are selected (and their individual parameters), the Advanced Amp settings such as Noise Gate, Bias and SAG, and the guitar being used. From what is being described here, it sounds like the behavior is within normal a range.

If anyone in this thread feels that their amp is extremely noisy or exhibiting hiss beyond what is reasonable, please contact us and we can assist further. Thanks.

I like to use many of the Fender amp models with a low gain setting and a max volume setting and a high to max master volume. The Princeton amp model has too much hiss for this setting unlike similar amp models. Even with the noise gate you will still hear the hiss as soon as you strike a string. I just accept that this amp model cant be played with a high volume and/or master volume level. The gain knob doesnt increase the hiss which is this amp models savior. By turning up the gain and lowering the volume knob you can lower the hiss and increase the signal to noise ratio. To further improve the S/N ratio, add a simple compressor with less than a max setting, it will boost the volume even more without raising the hiss as much. Adding an overdrive will help also.
The downside to doing this though, is you are stuck with a higher gain sound, but there are other Fender amp models you can use for a clean low gain sound.

Hi CNY Scott,

Thanks for your input and detailed suggestions here. One additional thought would be that for players who are reaching the point at which they find themselves turning the channel and Master volume up to or near 10 may want to consider a more powerful amp, which would likely accommodate more standard volume settings and allow more headroom to remain on the amp and improve signal to noise ratio. Please let us know if we can assist further.

I like to adjust my pickups on the low side, so I usually have the master volume between 7 and 10. My friend has his pickups set close to the strings and he sounded as loud as me at only 5 to 7 on the master volume when he plugged into my Mustang 3.

Hi CNY Scott,

You might want to check with our Consumer Relations guys here (if your guitar is a Fender) or the manufacturer and see what the specifications call for in regard to pickup height on your specific guitar model.
