Please help me. I have a new Mustang III amp, and I get a terrible constant hiss if the volume is above 4 (even on clean settings). I have downloaded the latest firmware, adjusted gain, noise gate and volume within presets but the problem is still there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :D

Hey RDB,

Do you notice the hiss on every amp model or only on some models?

I have a M3, 230V, and it's very hissy. I tried it on multiple AC sockets around the house, all grounded, to no avail.

In stock presets for example, the hiss is very obvious on the Princeton. On volume 2 you hear it. 5 makes it loud. On 10 it's like a cheering crowd. The hiss level varies between amps and gate settings. On the SuperSonic with gate off the hiss is louder than on the Princeton. Some other amp models might be quieter, but it's still very obviously there.

It's evident both on speaker and headphones. Didn't try USB. Firmware 1.9 didn't change it.

Should I expect something better after replacement?

Hey MPR,

I created a Princeton preset with the Gain on 5 and Volume on 7 with no effects and noise gate off. I didn't notice any of the hiss you mentioned. I would try a factory restore before I took it in for service.

Thanks Loren. The store sent it in for service, which sadly means I won't be seeing it back this week, so I can't try a reset. But it was brand new, so I assume a factory reset wouldn't help.

How much hiss is present in the setting you tried?

Are the European 230V 50Hz models more likely to hiss abnormally than the US variant?

I just spoke with the lead hardware engineer on the MIII, IV, V project. He says that there should be no difference that would cause hiss.

The preset I created has a very subtle audible hiss in this quiet environment. If someone is talking near me I can't hear it at all. It isn't noticeable unless I raise the Master volume to 5 or 6

Does it happen equally on headphones?

Indeed. I get the same thing through headphones. Do the different noise gate setting have any effect on the noise? And just so I"m clear, you're hearing a hiss and not a hum, right?

Yes, the noise gate influences it. And yes, hiss and not hum. I've also checked it without anything connected to minimize variables.

By now I've heard back from the local service. They said that's the way these amps are, but from what you say it sounds like it should be quieter.

Since the amount of hiss varies depending on settings, and since headphones are affected as well, am I correct in assuming the hiss is added in the modeling stage rather than the power amp?

I'll try to record the hiss for reference, and also see how direct-to-FX-return does.

I know that some of the high gain amp models have a certain amount of natural hiss. However the Princeton amp model shouldn't have much. Does the amount of hiss vary depeding on the amp model being used? Try a Twin Reverb amp model with no effects and low gain. How much hiss is present?

I just noticed my MIII has a loud constant hiss especially at higher volume levels even on clean models. Still happens even when I don't have a instrument cable plugged in. I don't notice hiss like this on any of my other amps. Not sure whats causing it but at higher volumes it sounds horrible.

RDB012, is there a compressor in the Post position? That'll boost hiss and noise.

I'm not sure about RDB012 but on mine it hisses even on a clean amp model with no effects with or without the noise gate. Actually the clean amp models make as much noise as the high gain ones. Although the hiss doesn't get annoying till the volumes past 4.

Is there anyway that you could send a sound sample of the hiss?
