Hi

I have had a Mustang 1 for a couple of weeks, really pleased with it. Its the only real amp I have, I normally just record myself and use stuff like Amplitube Fender in my DAW. So, on the amp and the fuse software all amps have a gain and volume control and on the amp a master volume as well. Now on amps like the 59 Bassman there is no gain control - so in cases like this how do these controls work compared with the real thing. For instance, with the Bassman how do I get it sound like the real thing (OK its a modelling amp so its not going to be perfect) - what effect does the gain have? Sure I can listen and hear it but, but I hope you get the drift of what I am asking.

Thanks

You're right that the Bassman doesn't have a Gain knob. I checked online. The Gain knob acts the same as the Volume knob does for the power-output stage, but it acts on the pre-amp stage instead. Most amps follow a signal chain like this:

Guitar Input -> Pre-amp boost stage -> EQ stage -> Power-amp Boost stage -> speakers.

In this case, the Gain knob would control the "volume" (or power-control) of the Pre-amp stage. The Bass, Middle, and Treble controls are for the EQ stage, and then your Presence and Volume controls are for the Power-amp stage.

The Pre-amp stage is so that the amp will have a much stronger signal to work with instead of the relatively tiny signal coming from your guitar. Without that pre-amp, the EQ controls would hardly work and do almost nothing.
