I've been playing around with the presets and some of the ones you can download. It seems like they are all too messy. Not tight enough. What can I do to get tighter tone?

Have you tried switching around the speaker cabinets? They have a drastic effect on the amp you're using. And different amps get better response with different cab models.

+1 on the cabinet models and tweak the compressor settings some. I haven't noticed that my III is any "looser" than other amps that I have without heavy compression.

Play with the SAG setting in advance amp settings. Same with bias.

Sometimes it could be just a matter of rolling off the volume on your guitar a little. These amps are very responsive to your guitar input. If you play with your guitar volume on 10 all the time, try rolling it back little by little. I've found that by doing this I can find the sweet spot on a lot of presets.

Good points above. Ive been playing over 35 years and probably one of the most important tone improvements Ive ever found was when I discovered the volume knob on the guitar.

And Ive found that the cab sims do make a big difference and are quite accurate IMHO.

As far as I understand " tighter ", i would say a BBE Sonic stomp in the loop.
I have a clone and it's always in now.
