If so, what differences are you noticing? I'm debating getting one since I'm not really on
I've with mIII

As you can see in my signature, I have ONE tube amp: the Marshall JVM410. 100-watts of all-valve muscle.

The differences. Hmmm. I would have to say the most obvious one is...

IT'S LOUD!

Like, rediculously loud. Like, I don't want to be able to hear a gunshot fired off 4 feet from my face when I'm 40 loud.

Two, the tone. It's definitely a Marshall, through and through. While the Fender Mustang models a JCM800 (with a lot less preamp gain) and a Plexi, this is the real deal.

Three, because of the way tubes behave, Sag and Bias are real things, not just modelled. In the Mustang, distortion and placement happens like a Solid-State amp, so changes in picking and intonation are immediate, not slightly delayed. By and far, the amp responds directly to your playing technique and how hard you play. Also, I can roll off almost ANY of the channels with my guitar's volume control and it cleans up nicely. The Mustang amp is the only SS I've met that does this half-as-good.

Check my amps out:

Nice set ups. So when do you ever use the mustang with all of those?

I do most of my practicing on my Mustang II. The rest of the amps, you can thank G.A.S. for.

The M5 is there because I just had to have it...plus I can give my M2 to someone or sell it. The JVM is just the most bad-ass Marshall ever made, so I had to have it. Then there's the Microstack which is more of a project than anything. I'm going to change the Celestion G12D-25s for G10 Vintages.

Well, this is interesting. I have two tube amps in addition to the Mustang I...and my main amp also happens to be a Marshall JVM! However, I've got the 50W head, which only has two channels rather than four. My other tube amp is one I built myself, which is basically a JCM800 preamp with a single-ended, 10W power amp, and I've tweaked it a bit...adding some switches to give me better cleans.

About the JVM, while it can certainly be loud, one of its best features is that is sounds so good at really low volumes...I can get great tones out if it late a night when my daughters are in bed without fear of waking them up! It's crazy, but it can get great tones at lower volumes than my 10W tube amp!

There is no doubt I get better overdriven and high gain tones from both of my tube amps. I can get decent overdriven and high gain tones from the Mustang, but it still doesn’t measure up to the tones I get from my tube amps. The Mustang excels at the cleaner tones, IMO, and with a good speaker, it probably gives my tube amps a run for their money. I’m pretty happy with the clean tones I get from my JVM, but a good Fender Clean is hard to beat. I think the 4-channel JVMs get closer to that Fendery clean, but that was one thing that was compromised for the 2-channel version.

I bought the Mustang mostly because I wanted a new toy! I wanted something that was easy to carry upstairs if I wanted to play guitar while watching TV, something that I could use with headphones or not. If I'm playing in my music room, I'm generally playing one of the tube amps...though occasionally will play the Mustang through one of the speaker cabs for kicks. I have also taken the Mustang when I go to a friend’s house to jam...though it didn’t cut through like I had hoped, not sure how much was the 8” speaker and how much the EQ…could have needed more mids, but without a mid control on the MI, I had no way to remedy that! With the MIII you have a better, bigger speaker, AND a mid control, so it might work fine in that setting.

So IMHO, the Mustang does not really take the place of a good tube amp. Personally, I don’t know anyone who regretted buying a good tube amp. (However, many people who bought a mediocre tube amp did end up regretting it, so if you do end up buying a tube amp, make sure you try as many as you can and get one you like!) However, enjoy your Mustang III, and even if you get a tube amp, keep the Mustang. It makes a great backup amp, or even just a very portable second amp!

About your Mustang I, the latest update came with a function that allows you to change your MIDs from the panel by holding one of the buttons down while you turn another knob. I don't know the details (even though I should, I have an M2), but it's on the forum here somewhere.

What I do with my M2 is I hook it up to my Netbook. Yes, I know it cuts the very bottom off of the screen, but it's close enough to give me total control of my amp using a VERY portable device and a battery ~4 hours worth. And the Netbook can sit right on top of the amp, giving you controls while you're practicing. Not very pretty during a gig, though.

NO, but I have a Mustang 1 in addition to my tube amps

Boogie 2c+
Rivera Fender concert head
Laney LC15R
2 Epi V Jnr heads ( 1 modified )
Impact Mk 11 head (2 watt)

All too loud for "bedroom" use

Ooops - forgot Marsh 57 Tweed Deluxe clone

Hmmm...I'll have to look at that mids thing...could be handy. I did download the latest updates.

As for taking some kind of computer along...if I'm going to that much trouble I might as well take my JCM home brew 1x12 combo! Besides, I don't have any portable computing device and I doubt my wife will let me put guitar stuff on her laptop...even if I did manage to pry it out of her hands!!

I found where someone said it would be nice to push a button and turn the treble or bass knob to adjust mids, but I don't find a post that confirms this was ever done...am I just missing it?

My M2 has the lastest 1.8 update and I just tried with all my knobs and I got no Middle response. But if I hold Exit + Volume, it changes the USB Gain knob. Big whup. I think you're right. I think they suggested it to Fender for a future update. That's probably why I thought they had it already.

I have a Line 6 Spider Valve 112 which sounds super with its Celestion speaker. Like the Mustang ... it is a preset lover's dream machine. I hate turning knobs and just want my 5-6 faves ....I'm thinking about trying to insert a Celestion speaker into my M1 which probably has cheap little speaker at the moment.

I have a Fender 59' Bassman, a 1970 non master volume Fender Super Reverb, a 1978 Silverface Fender Twin Reverb for my tube amp collection. The biggest difference is in the Bass. There is none. The mustang (I have a V) has no bass response. On my other Fenders I never put the Bass up past 3. On the Fender Mustang I have to put the Bass on 10 Just to sound nearly normal.

I love the usb gain changing.... Now I can set it to the right volume when I'm recording on my ipad.... It is a "Big whup"

That's really wierd, because with my default presets, the bass on my Mustang V can rattle the windows if I turn the volume up. It's not my Marshall JVM, but it's plenty loud and plenty punchy. What cab are you running the head through? I'm using the Fender (Mustang) V412 cab with the Rocket 50 speakers.
