am going to be getting a mustang 1 today (cannot wait :D am not going to be buying a foot switch for it though (unless i can get a deal on both  what do you do if you are playing a piece of music and it has different sounds during playing the piece (i.e going from heavy distortion to chimey clean e.t.c WITHOUT having to press a button to change amp settings e.t.c).
what i'm trying to get at i think,is can anyone recommend a good amp setting for playing decent rock type sound, but can also back the volume to get a nice chimey clean sound also :? i have a squier cv tele and would like to be able to play rush's classic spirit of radio (contains both rock/chimey clean sounds).
apologies for asking a moon on a stick type question/being long winded in my post  but i haven't had my own guitar/amp for over a year (have just been practising on an un-amped electric guitar).thanks in advance :)

That's quite hard to do with the volume pot on these amps. You can do that with the VOX AC30 amp setting (British '60s) but not much else. Even the JCM800 still has just a hint of grit to it, even with the gain near 0 (I can hear it in my headphones). Try the VOX amp setting and see how that works for you.

Agree with FFIXHealer, gonna be hard, if not impossible. I really recommend getting the footswitch...it's only $20 and it makes the amp that much more flexible...well worth it IMHO.

Only real options for changing tones mid song are the foot-switch, which on the Mustang 1 will let you change between 2 predetermined presets, or using the volume knob on the guitar to back off volume when you want the cleaner tone. I find that the Mustang amp tone is pretty sensitive to volume settings on the guitar.

Of course, if there is a distinct pause in the song where the tone changes, you might have time to dial in another preset on the amp by hand, especially if the amp is close by, but if the change come quicker than that, the foot-switch or guitar volume knob are probably the only options.
