I have the mustang 1 and use a lot of the presets, but I also have 6 or 7 pedals (BD2 Blues Driver, TR-2 Tremolo, PH-2 Super Phaser, Crybaby original Wah, and some others.) I have been neglecting them and want to hook my board up to this amp. My question is what preset would be best. I play in front of about 200 people at church on Sundays (mostly rock) and I was wondering if I should use a specific preset as a base and then play with my pedals or should I turn everything off and just add treble and bass as I would with a generic amp? I know there are more specifics you may want to know, but as a general rule, should I not have any effects at all on when using my pedals and just start with a clean (not preset clean, but really clean basic guitar sound) or go with a specific preset that someone can reccommend that is pretty close to clean with some gain? I am racking my brain since I have an amp with presets that I want to use pedals with for a unique sound. Hope this makes sense. Moderators are welcome to answer too.

Well... i guess that when you change amp, basically you whould tweak the stomp to get the desired effect with that particular amp. When it comes to a digital amp, i may suggest you to set up the volume sorting out from the stomp to a level that the digital amp handle well (this should apply to boosting stomp and not to delay/mod/filter stomps). If you need to boost the guitar signal i may suggest you to learn to use the internal OD-stomp from the mustang. The BD2 should work well to "color" your sound --> may works better with a low gain setting. That sayd i will happyly experiment with the stomps over any channel/preset and then find out if i can archive similar results with the amp/internal-stomps.

People certainly do use pedals successfully and happily with the Mustang amps, but logically, given that these are modeling amps with 30+ effects, perhaps you should start by trying to set up tones with some of the built-in effects first, to see if you can get close to sounds that you like, before placing a whole raft of pedals in front of the amp.

It may turn out that the amp on its own will get you close to what you want, and then you will maybe only need one or two of your pedals to get you the rest of the way- for example, the Mustang's built-in chorus and wah always seem pretty poor to me and maybe pedals could help out there, etc.

If you really want to use your whole pedal board, with 6 or 7 effects switching in and out, then logically a fairly clean starting tone on the amp would be the way to go or things could get messy.

I agree with the previous posters...I don't see a lot of point in using pedals with the Mustang amps, except maybe the Wah. Just for kicks and giggles, I tried a couple of my OD/Dist pedals with my Mustang and really wasn't very happy with the results. The Twin Reverb is what makes sense to me as the number one GO-TO for cleans, but if it's tweaked for a bright, chimey clean tone, my OD/Dist pedals just sounded thin and like a tin can.

If you DO want to use OD/Dist pedals, the trick would be finding an amp model that's not too bright and not too dark...maybe start with the Deluxe Reverb, or maybe even a UK 70s set as clean as possible.

I even tried using an OD pedal as a boost with the UK 70s and UK 80s amps, since I do that with great results with my tube amps...but the results were disappointing.

But personally, I've found it easier and gotten better tones just using the different amp models and leaving my pedal board to be used with other amps, except for the Wah, as I stated earlier.

The reason I want to use a combo is because I have 1 preset, then 2 more with a footswitch and I play a 6 song set without a break and it's kind of embarrassing to have to turn my volume down after 3 songs and then turn the dial for the next 3 songs so I want to add pedals into the mix. Mostly since its Christian rock by all different artists I'm really using 6 different presets to get the sound I want on each song, but I am a perfectionist. I'll just make my 3rd preset clean and mix pedals in or just add to two kind of clean presets. Thanks for all the great answers. They did help.

I use an M3 with my pedalboard. I use the basic '65 fender Twin preset. It ROCKS!
