Getting back into guitar after a lay-off and my old Marshall Reverb 12 seems to be dying (cutting out every so often). Looking at the Mustang III for a few reasons -
Lots of presets (I am fairly time-poor so dont want too much laptoppery with Fuse)
Wattage future proofs me for playing with others
4way footswitch compatability.
But in reality will be doing a lot of playing in my house so need to avail of the attributes of the amp at low volume.
Would be playing all sorts of styles except metal (too old).
Can I get a bit of crunch and character without exploiting the watts and alienating the family and neighbours?
Thanks in advance....

You betcha. In my opinion that is where this amp excels. I've compared all the competion, the Mustang has the best "tube like" characteristics that I've heard from a modeling amp (my opinion). Dial in your tone and set the master volume to any level. It will sound just as good at 1 as it does at 5 (I havn't had my MIII much past 5 as it tends to explode my eardrums :D ).

While the MIII can certainly be used for 'quiet' playing, it does tend to go from quiet to LOUD pretty quickly when you start turning up the Master volume. Also, at very low volumes I don't think you get the best tone because you are not driving the speaker/moving so much air.

But I also haven't had it much past 5 on the Master volume, even when playing live in a full band, albeit in smaller venues.

Just my two (Australian) cents !

This amp, the Mustang III is superb for playing at whisper quiet volumes as well as being cranked up... I can't believe the sound in either scenario! It is a GREAT amp.

You can use headphones if you don`t want to annoy anyone.

I play the MIII at very low volume next to a sleeping baby's room and it's OK, but not as great as when you push the volume just past 2. As mentioned here, it's a bit difficult to set the volume level not too loud whenever you try to adjust the master.

The sound coming from USB and headphones seems to use other cab sim which sounds really different (in the bad way) to my ears.

It doesn't use a different cabinet simulation. The problem lies in the difference between a 12" speaker moving large amounts of air and your headphones with, say, a 1" speaker moving almost no air. The 12" has a lot more bass response and has a larger distance to move back and forth. Then you have all of the air it's trying to move, which resists the effort. In your headphones, the tiny speakers don't have to fight the air nearly as much, so what you hear is the ACTUAL sound being supplied to your speakers with almost no air resistance (and a huge drop in power) and the speaker cone barely moves, driving up the efficiency of the sound reproduction (but usually having crappy bass response).

I have a set of Sony Monitoring headphones and it does sound quite different than the amp's speaker, but allows me to play without pissing off the house or the neighbors.

When I use the USB interface to my PC, I use the PC speakers as my monitor and they do sound a bit different. I have 2" speakers with a 6-8" subwoofer. It does really good sound articulation, but doesn't move as much air and therefore sounds completely different than an actual guitar speaker does.

Just had my M3 amp for 48 hours and very happy at playing at low volume settings (2 or 3) without losing any grunt. I haven't had the opportunity to crank up the volume yet but looking forward to trying when neighbour takes vacation
