I currently have a Mustang V head running through a Fender DT-412 cabinet. I'm thinking of selling the DT-412 and getting a Mustang V 412 cabinet. The DT-412 has G12T-100 speakers, while the Mustang cabinet has Rocket 50s. I realize the Mustang cabinet has independent connections to each speaker load for stereo purposes, which my current cabinet does not. I've never heard the Mustang cabinet before. Would I notice that much of a difference in tone between the two cabs? How do the rocket 50s compare to the G12Ts? Is the stereo effect I'm now missing with my current cab something I'd notice quite a bit with a Mustang cab?

Sorry for all the questions. I've searched but can't find the answers I'm looking for. BTW, if it matters much, I play mostly rock stuff with Van Halen-tpye tones. Thanks.

Hey Kabinski,
Another approach you might look into is going with a 2x12 cab wired in stereo. I had a local cab builder (Ken Jones - Kernerville, NC) build me a knock-off of a Marshall Bluesbreaker cab and I loaded it with 2 Eminence Cannabis Rex speakers. He put a special jack plate on the back that allows me to run either stereo or mono (4 or 16 ohms). It sounds great - and yes, stereo makes a *huge* difference in tone compared to mono (l've got a MIII too).

I play a lot of different styles, but for the rock stuff, I use the SuperSonic coupled with just a touch of chorus and the stereo delay with a single, short repeat - just like Eddie used on the first couple of albums (delay that is, chorus came later...). It sounds great to my ear - especially with my main guitar that has the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary pickups that were in the original Music Man EVH sig guitar. Great PAF pickup with fairly low output - perfect for early EVH tone.

Hope that helps. I looked at the 4x12 cab, but the extra bulk and weight just wasn't worth it to me - most of my gigs have my rig mic'd up anyway. Another great cab is the THD 2x12 - hard to find, but great full sound too.

I have the Mustang V and the V412 cabinet for it with the Celestion Rocker 50 speakers. The only other large speaker cabinet I can compare it to is my Marshall 1960A Lead cab loaded with Celestion G12T-75s. The Rocket 50 speakers have a more balanced frequency responce compared to the slightly more scooped G12Ts, because of the modelling nature of the amp. Since it has to attempt to reproduce all 12 different amps, PLUS the 13 speaker cabinet combinations already, it works better to produce the sounds the Mustang was designed to produce. My Marshall cab with the G12Ts only has to deal with Marshall sounds (it's hooked up to my JVM).

You'll probably notice a bit more mids with the Rocket 50s. That cabinet was built by Fender specifically for the Mustang V head. You should be impressed by it once you've broken the speakers in. And, of course, the stereo is a plus.

Just a thought, but do you HAVE to sell the DT-412? I mean, if you held onto it for a bit, you might be able to invest in a big tube amp too, like a Marshall DSL50 or a JVM205. The G12Ts would work really well with an amp like that.

Received the Mustang cabinet yesterday. Sounds awesome! Definitely different than the DT-412. Thanks again!
