Would it be possible to connect a small mixer to the guitar input of a Mustang III to be able to swap between multiple guitars, for instance, guitars in different tunings? I play electric and acoustic guitar and an octave mandola with a passive piezo pickup. I thought that by using a small P.A mixer on the guitar input I could get their relative volumes right before input into the amp, but I would like to know if the line output from the desk would be OK for the input on the amp.

Line outs are usually fine. It's SPEAKER outs you don't want to use, because they carry enough voltage/amps to drive speakers. That kind of current will damage ANY amp's input jack. It should work.

Hi Guys,
I tried using an electro acoustic guitar and my octave mandolin plugged into a small Behringer mixer. I panned them both left and adjusted the channel gains and EQ then took a mono feed from the left main out to my Mustang III. I tried a few tweaked acoustic presets mostly with the Bassman or Twin Reverb amp settings. It worked great, I think it's a much better idea than using an ABY box as everything is balanced and sorted before it gets to the Mustang. I have a Pacifica which I can also plug in to another channel plus the benefit of 2 send and return channels for my Boss Looper or any other processor. I have a gig with my band Xmas eve in my local Hotel and will definitely be using this setup :)

The best solution I found for two guitars is one of these
Ampridge GA101 Jam Cable Dual Guitar Adaptor

I can't imagine going through all of this but you really have worked it out. I am sure there is a reason that you are not using your sound system for the acoustic instruments and I for one appreciate you sharing this with us.

Hi Whoule,
Whilst my electro acoustic guitar with its built in preamp sounds fine straight into a PA desk, my mandola with its passive piezo sounds really thin and reedy, it also ha no volume control. If I used a Y splitter like Majorbytes suggested then I would have a level mismatch that I would have to deal with by remembering to change presets before changing instruments,(just another thing to think of onstage), Plus they would both be outputting all of the time. With the desk i can pull the fader down on the unused instrument. I could mike the mandola but have to deal with the feedback, or use a preamp on the mandola,(another box to deal with). As i had a spare little mixer kicking around it made perfect sense to use it. I can set levels and eq at the start of the night, and it doesn't really matter if I forget to stomp the preset pedal when I change instruments, as the level from the two instruments is the same. I really like the versatility of sounds on the Mustang III, I've got a few pedals,(Zoom,Boss etc.) but they don't compare, and I could do without the spaghetti.

I hope you and other members, non members find this of interest.

I knew there was a reason but wow...you have quite a bit to deal with on stage. Sometimes manufacturers don't think, why make a professional quality instrument without putting an active piezo for on stage use. Tell me you aren't a front man as well...LOL

The only "odd-ball" instrument that I have to deal with is a uke (that frican train song on the radio) and I just drop my vocal mike down for that one song.

Hi Whoule,
The mandola is a reaaly nice instrument made by a guy in Glasgow by the name of Jimmy Moon, it cost a packet. I think that with such a small body, anything like the size of a preamp would interfere with the sound. I know that there are small preamps that fit into the jack socket, but it would mean enlarging the original jack socket hole to fit the new one, and I'm not keen on doing that. I tried the mixer thing on Christmas eve and it worked pretty well. I'm not the front man of the band, but I do take the lead vocal for some songs and backing vocal on the rest, plus some harmonica on a few songs. My band is called "The Coast Road Truckers", there are a few live things on youtube but the recording quality is pretty poor. Still it's my birthday around easter time, maybe the missus will buy me one of them Zoom Q3 HD camera thingys.
Hope you had a good Christmas.
