I've got the Mustang III. I need a rhythm channel and a lead channel or some sort of boost for playing leads. I love the sound of the "Double Track Stack" patch but I've found that I can not switch while playing because of the wretched sound that the amp makes when switching between patches. This has disappointed me greatly. I have not found a good way to boost for a lead solo. Why is the patch switching speed so slow? At least silence the sound for a milli second while switching to the next patch. Any suggestions how to boost for solo work?

Hmmm. DoubleTrackStack, patch #40. From my panel, I can see that there is no stomp box. Get this patch to sound how you like it without one, then program in an Overdrive pedal to boost the level/gain slightly and EQ to taste for your lead. This way during a gig, if you use a 4-button switch-pedal, you just hit button 2 in Mode 3 so that it turns your stomp box on and off.

The other way to do it is to get some kind of boost, like a BOSS ST-2 (Power Stack) so that you just hit that during play. No sound interrupt in either case, just an instant boost to your amp.

Also, you might want to check and make sure you have the most up-to-date firmware. It's 1.8, if I'm not mistaken. Use FUSE to update your firmware.

+1 on making sure you have the latest firmware. Preset switching time was greatly improved with v.1.8.
