I'd love to buy a Mustang III, but all the fizz reports here and elsewhere are making me extremely nervous. Cleans are very important to me.I know I could try one out in the store and only buy if it does not fizz, but with all the reports of fizz developing over time, that seems like no guarantee I won't be dissatisfied later.

I reckon I could get by with the fewer features and lower wattage of the II - sound quality is the most important factor. I understand however that the III speaker is better. What would you think about replacing the speaker in a II - would it start to sound as full and yummy as a (non-fizzing) III? I do have a Celestion V30 I could try.

If I were you I'd wait until the NAMM trade show next month to see if Fender announces anything new such as an upgrade to the Mustang line. Of course then you'd have to wait several months for them to hit the stores, and there's always the possibility that they'll fizz too.

If you just can't wait, I got the III because you can edit most of the features without hooking up a computer. It's great at low levels, loud enough to gig with yet light enough to grab and go. The G12T-100 speaker by itself sells new for $129. Someday after a fizz-fit I might just chuck the MIII in the garbage, but I'm keeping that speaker.

I took a chance on the MIII because the price was right and I thought that even if I got the fizz, Fender would one day be able to fix it. That doesn't seem likely now. The fizz is an issue for me because some of what I play is clean quiet jazz with the tone rolled down. For most people it won't matter.

If I had to do it again, I'd wait, and if nothing new comes out, I'd probably give the MII a shot and just run it through the PA at gigs.

I've got a Mustang I and I put an external speaker jack on it. I have a three different cabs I can hook it up to and it sounds phenomenally better through any of them. So if you can live without the fancy controls on the III, I think buying the II and upgrading the speaker is a decent idea...in fact, I just offered that as an suggestion to someone else here. Using FUSE, you have complete control over the amps different parameters, so if you don't need to be able to tweak every little thing on the fly, that would probably work.

Thanks for the advice. I went to check one one out at a local store and the III fizzed like mad. They didn't have a II in stock unfortunately, but I ended up trying a competitor product, liked it better and bought that. If not for the fizz, I might have looked into the Mustang more closely, but on clean settings the fizz was intolerable.

I'm glad the II works well through ext cabinets. It is amazing the differnce a really good cab makes.

@fearlessflier If I were you I'd stay away from the entire Mustang line ... and buy something else ... it's simply not worth the all the trouble if it starts to fizz.

For what it's worth,

I just brought home a brand new Mustang III a couple hours ago. Manufactured: 02/20/11

1. It fizzed like mad exactly like the sound bits here: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=57294
2. I updated the firmware to 1.8.
3. It still fizzes like mad.

All clean notes sound like "plinkeeeeweeeoooweoooweeeeeweeeeeoooow". These lemons should have been recalled. Yes, I am pissed.

Quexoz, why did you buy a mustang III without trying one out in the store first? I am sure you knew about the fizz problem before you bought this amp, right? You should have known it was a gamble buying a new boxed one? You should have tried a floor model first to see if it fizzed or not.

I did. I did not notice anything in the store. But I wouldn't anyway with all the ambient noise, and not testing every single preset, etc. So what? It's my fault Fender is shipping out defective units still? How long has this been going on?

@Quexoz ... from day 1 ... a little over a year now.

The MI and MII came on the market at the end of 2010. Some of them fizzed from the get go. Fender issued new software that seems to have fixed it.

When the MIII, MIV and MV came out ... some of them fizzed from the get go too ... and software revisions didn't help.

Fearlessflier,
I have a fizzing III. I was going to sell it and get a II, but... no 4-button foot switch option (and no display for faster tweaking, but I can live without that). For me, the Mustang II is not so gig-able even with a mic.

Right now my options are selling it and trying an attenuator on it. The fizzing doesn't seem to go up in volume much or at all as I turn the master volume up. If I can run the master at 7 or so at home an attenuator could then lower both the fizz volume and the room volume to where at-home clean playing is an option again.

(Note that running the master at 7 with the guitar turned way down doesn't solve the problem. You now have the normal hiss of an amp turned up high, and the fizz volume is still there as always. You have to attenuate the fizz.)
