I am trying to get an output signal from Ableton through the Fender ASIO to my PC headphones. The PC recognizes the Mustang as the input, but when I set the output for my sound card I get this (hovering the mouse pops up this message)

The one that really gets me is the "Computers hate you!" comment. LOL

If your monitoring needs are more than the amp can provide, definitely consider a external audio interface.

That's what I figured. Doesn't work in Cubase either, with the desktop's soundcard. However, my amp isn't supposed to provide my "monitoring needs" as it is an input device only. I can record with it (I see the waveform appear on the track) I just can't monitor the recording or play back the recording until I switch the whole kit-and-kaboodle back to my PC or Laptop's soundcard.

Til now, I did all my recordings thru my Zoom HD16 portable studio and then imported the wav. files for each track into Cubase LE. It would just be nice to be able to record straight into Cubase or Ableton.

Using the Fender ASIO driver, you should be able to assign the amp and an input device and your soundcard as the output device, all without making any changes on the fly to hear what you've recorded.

Having this same problem. I used to get that same error screen with earlier soundcard drivers. Now it's just a 'X' in 'output' when I activate the Mustang input. I'm using version 2.10F of the Fender ASIO. I've even tried ASIO4ALL and I get the same thing

Yep. Tried ASIO4ALL also. No luck. In the Fender ASIO (or ASIO4ALL) control panel, I enable it for input, but when I enable my soundcard (Sigmatel on my laptop, Soundmax on my desktop) I get those little yellow "gender" symbols. (see screenshot in first post).

The ASIO4ALL manual says these are "Beyond Logic" which means the device is refusing to start and/or displays erratic behavior of any kind and to try closing and reopening the control panel, or try unplugging and reinserting the USB connection.

Didn't work for me either way. Beginning to think the USB feature of this amp is pretty much useless for my situation. I'm getting a Griffin iMic interface to see if that works.

The Ableton forum has people with the same problem but I never saw anyone respond to the queries there.

Jetplane,

I had the exact same problem and got the exact message. I have the sigmatel soundcard too. I attribute the issue to the soundcard and/or driver just not being up to the tasks as it's a basic soundcard (at least mine is). Alan Willey went above and beyond the call of duty to help me, but together we couldn't resolve it. I ended up buying (was planning on anyway) the Roland UA4FX USB interface and everything works great! It came with Sonar LE which is what I use now and prefer over Ableton. With it, I can simultaneously monitor playback and record with little to no latency. However, my mustang II is connected to the UA4FX 1/4 inputs via the mustang's 1/8 headphone out. Hope it all works out for you.

I tried pretty much all the suggested methods but to no avail. It still will not enable both in and out together. I've come to the conclusion that the standard 'basic' sound support that comes with most computers are not up to the task as bluesdelux says. I have one more computer to try it on and that's the one with an M-Audio 2496 card in it and Sonar Producer 8.5 software (which I more familiar with than Ableton). If THAT doesn't work, then the last resort would just be to go out of the headphone output.

I've decided to buy an interface. Already ordered a Griffin iMic. but regretting it now because it doesn't have ASIO drivers and I don't know if I can use it in Cubase or Ableton. . :? (maybe Audacity) If nothing else, I can use it to record my cassette tapes in Audacity. LOL.

I'll give the RolandUA4FX a look-see.

I can't afford a major music production soundcard. If I could I would've bought a more expensive amp.

If my m-audio system checks out, and if you have a spare PCI slot in your PC, you can get an Audiophile 2496 card for as low as $70 and these are definitely superior to the basic sound hardware in most PCs.

As it stands, because the Mustang cannot receive audio data via USB and enabling it for input in the asio/recording software effectively conflicts with the soundcard output (puts an 'X' on the output line of the soundcard), there's no way to monitor existing playback while recording on another track -at least not through the onboard sound hardware. To put it simply, enabling Mustang for input shuts down soundcard output - at least on my system.

Ok. I got it now. With my Griffin iMic plugged into one USB port, plug headphones into it's "OUT". Then I plugged my Mustang's USB OUT into another USB port.

Then in Ableton, I set preferences:
Driver type: ASIO
Audio Device: ASIO4ALL (all this didn't work with Fender ASIO)
click on Hardware Setup to get the ASIO4ALL control panel
Click the little wrench in the ASIO4ALL at the bottom,
Expand everything
---Sigmatel(my soundcard) . . . on
------out. . . . . off
------in. . . . . . .off
---iMic (my interface). . . on
------out. . . . . .. . .on
------in. . . . . . . . . off
---Mustang. . . . . . on
Image

In PC's control panel go to Sounds and Audio Devices folder.

Under Sounds tab, select "no sounds in the dropdown. Click Apply

Under Audio tab, Select your interface(mine is iMic) Under Sound Playback dropdown.

Then select Mustang Amplifier under Sound Recording dropdown

Click Apply and close.....Now it's just a matter of knowng how to use Ableton. (hint: make sure you enable the track for recording AND in the transport.)

Glad to hear you solved your problem. I gave up trying to do the USB thing and just went with the headphone out solution. It's working well so I'm happy with the sound. I guess I could even go out of the effects send straight into my mixer.

Update: I uninstalled and reinstalled the ASIO driver. Still have a problem in Ableton but Sonar Producer 8 works fine. I'm able to select Soundmax output and Mustang as input with no conflicts and can record normally. I noticed that the Fender ASIO driver was not being used (no icon in system tray) so it's most likely in the driver that has the problem.

~EDIT~

Somehow my sound card changed to 48hrz and that had a conflict with ASIO driver.
Changed them to both match 44hrz and all works.

Strange, my echo audio card and fender mustang was working for 3 days!
Today its that "Beyond logic" error when I enable the mustang!

1. I restored my PC from backup.
2. Changed USB ports.

Still beyond logic.

Strange because I have not done any changed to my PC.
Plus stranger when restoring my windows 7 from backup and installing fender ASIO all my DAWS wont monitor when the fender mustang is enabled!

Nothing has changed! My sound card is pro quality and was working for 5 years!

Could the mustang have messed up or should I restore the mustang to factory?
