Hi guys I signed up to the forums cause I am considering a Mustang 3 or a Peavey Vypyr 75,and would like your thoughts and opinions on these amps.I am really leaning toward the Mustang but am a little hesitant to pull the trigger on one because of some of the clips I have found on you tube sound kinda thin when trying to get a metal/modern metal tone.It could be due to the crappy way some folks have recorded them or the compression/clipping on you tube.
The metal tones I have heard on the Vypyr are pretty rippin,although I have read all the problems alot of folks have with them.Has anyone here gone from a vypyr to a mustang,or have had any experience with both?
How versitile is the Mustang?My playing ranges anywhere from Van Halen to Hank 3(his country stuff and metal/punk)80's rock and metal.Enough with my rambling,let me know how ya like yours and why or why not I should go for the mustang.Thanks Roger

The only videos on YouTube that will be anything close to the real thing are ones that have been professionally mic'd (or recorded with Line-Out) and edited. You can usually tell who these are because they'll be reviews by music retailers or the brands trying to market/demo their own stuff on-line. The average-joe YouTuber will record either with a crappy mic or with a crappy camera. Both make the amps, even nice big amps, sound like crap. Don't trust those to give an accurate sampling.

I own a Mustang II and a Mustang V and I love the tones. The Mustang V has tons more headroom and can deliver a lot more punch with its 150 watts of trouser-flapping power. At least you're going with a Mustang III, which pushes 100 watts through a 1x12" Celestion speaker.

My recommendation: play on both at a music store yourself BEFORE you buy. THEN decide.

Thanks for the reply.The only problem is I am from a hick town and most stores only carry crappy little amps.No one around has either amp for me to try out so which ever amp I choose it will be bought sight unseen and unheard.Currently I run a PRS and a Jackson Dinky through my block letter 5150 half stack,it's way too much for practice and playin around the house.I know neither amp will get the thump of my 5150 but I still would like to get which ever one will get some good tones at small gigs and at bedroom levels.The more I read up on the Mustang the more I like it,just might go with it if I can find out if it can get dirty and scream.Judging by clips I have heard of the clean tones they sound pretty good,kinda what you would expect from a Fender.I just have never associated rippin high gain amps with Fender(Not counting the 5150 iii)Thanks again,the search continues......

Well then, consider the 12 amp models that come built into the Mustang amps:

'57 Fender Champ
'57 Fender Deluxe
'59 Fender Bassman
'65 Fender Deluxe Reverb
'65 Fender Princeton
'65 Fender Twin Reverb
Fender Super-Sonic (Burn channel)
Vox AC30
Marshall Plexi
Marshall JCM800
Mesa Boogie Rectifier
Peavey 6505+

Note that the Mese Boogie and the Peavey amps are both very high gain models. You can get another really high-gain tone from the JCM800 if you add in the overdrive stomp effect to the preset. Also, in the FUSE software that comes with the amp, you'll be able to change and swap around the speaker cabinet model simulation for each preset as well. You can choose from the original combo speakers from the Fender amps, plus two different Super-Sonic sets (1x12" or 2x12"). Then you have the big cabinets:

4x12M = 4 x 12" Celestion G12T-75s
2x12C = 2 x 12" <unknown> speakers
4x12G = 4 x 12" Celestion "Greenbacks"
4x12V = 4 x 12" Celestion Vintage 30s
SS112 = 1 x 12" Celestion Vintage 30
SS212 = 2 x 12" Eminence speakers
65TWN = 2 x 12" Jensen C12N speakers
65PRN = 1 x 10" Jensen C10R speaker
65DLX = 1 x 12" Jensen C12Q speaker
BSSMN = 4 x 10" Jensen speakers
57DLX = 1 x 12" <unknown> speaker
CHAMP = 1 x 8" <unknown> speaker

You can also turn the speaker cabinets off so that you hear the unmodified sound of the amp models (so you can do a base comparison of the amps and of the cabs).

Cool man,those speaker sims sound interesting.A while back I had a Rocktron Utopia floor unit that had speaker sims built in,it really opened up the sound of it.I dunno it made it fuller to my ears.

I don't play much with metal tones, but I can tell you I had a Vypyr 75 and now have a a Mustang IV. The Vypyr was a load of trouble if you ask me. I tried hard to look past its faults but ultimately gave up. Listen to some quality pro-made sample of your metal tones on YouTube with the Mustang and decide if it's up your alley. Do not listen to some guy in his bedroom flailing away. I never looked back on selling the Vypyr.

Thanks bmoyer,I have heard the vypyr's aren't real reliable from the majority of the reviews I have read.

I have the vypyr 15 and 30w i also have the mustang I and mustang V,first let me start with my opinion of the vypyr 15 and mustang I,the vypyr 15 is louder then the mustang I and the vypyr has the edge over the mustang as far as the high gain amp models go but the clean fender models sound better in the mustang I and you can change amp models and tweak other settings in fuse for your mustang(you cannot do this with the vypyr),i like both of these amps equally for the variety of tones i get from these amps. My vypyr 30 is very bright and harsher sounding compared to my mustang V,i had to add a beam blocker to filter out the high end harshness and it also lacks low end with many of the high gain amp models,i would recommend using a guitar with vintage or p.a.t. pickups to add warmth and bottom end to the vypyr,i use a PRS 2001 santana se with my vypyr 30 and it sounds good with it but other thinner sounding guitars will not. My mustang V is much warmer sounding and most of my guitars sound good with the mustang V,the fender clean amp models also sound very good on the mustang V,the cleans are ok on the vypyr 30 but much lower in volume compared to the vypyrs high gain models,i like my mustang V better overall then my vypyr 30,the vypyr and mustangs do have there problems though,my vypyr 30 locks up sometimes when i change presets with my sanpera foot pedal and can be noisy with the high gain amp models,the mustang III-V can have the dreaded fizz problem that is mentioned a lot on this forum,it really is up to you to decide for yourself on what amp may be right for you.
