Hi everybody,

I already have a Boss GT-10 and I'm really thinking in buy the fender MIII.
Actually I was thinking in use a 4 cable method to connect guitar, amp and pedalboard as following:
Cable 1: Guitar > Normal Input on the GT
Cable 2: GT Send > MIII Input
Cable 3: MIII Send > GT Return
Cable 4: GT Output > MIII Return

On GT-10 the impedance have this values:
INPUT: 1 M ohm
RETURN: 220 k ohms
OUTPUT: 2 k ohms
SEND: 3 k ohms

and the nominal levels are:
INPUT: -10 dBu
RETURN: -10 dBu
OUTPUT: -10 dBu / +4 dBu
SEND: -10 dBu

Is there any technical problem with this setup?

-
Walter

Hi there Walter,

I have both the GT10 and the Mustang III.
I've tried to get the amp control working on the GT10 so i could switch from a clean patch to a heavy distorted patch on my mustang III amp.
I could only switch from preset 00 to preset 01 but not back, so that didn't work.

But here's what I did instead.
I'm running the Boss GT10 in 4 cable method on the mustang III amp.
On the first footswitch I made me a nice clean sounding patch with the GT10 preamp.
On the second footswitch I put no preamp or effects, but i turned on the Send/Return on the GT10 on that patch.
So in that way if I hit the second footswitch on the GT10 I get the mustang III amp sound( For me I've got it set to a metal amp), and if I want clean I switch back to the first footswitch.

On the GT10 on the control 1 pedal i've got a flanger.
On the control 2 pedal i made a solo sound with delay and tone modify.
And set the GT10 Expression pedal to Cry wah.
For me this is all I need, and I won't be using the 4 way button switch, because I can control my settings with the GT10.
But if you want to use more amps from the Mustang III you could get more out of it if you're also use the fender 2 or 4 way button switch beside the GT10.

The Mustang III is a great sounding amp and together with the GT10 you've got youreself a killer set up.

Hi Pete1970,

My biggest concern is the compatibility between the Mustang III and the GT-10.

Until now I still haven't seen at least one video or comment from users using this kind of setup (MIII + pedalboard). In some forums, including here on fender.com, some they said there were some kind of technical incompatibility regarding the impedance.

But if you use this setup, I think there is no problem at all. So, the MIII is just like any others amp: has no use restrictions that prevent them from being used with a pedalboard.

Thanks for your reply.

I have been a GT10 owner since it came out, and recently bought a Mustang III because:
- The guy in the shop was raving about it
- I needed something lightweight for small gigs

After trial and error I would suggest the following if you want to use the GT10 for your patches and the amp without modelling sounds:

Set up:
Gtr>GT10>Effects return on the amp (I don't connect anything to the effects send). So nothing going into the line input.

Create a clean patch on the amp. Take off everything. I even take the bass/treble down to about 1.6

This allows the good tones of the GT10 to come through and the amp as a vanilla flavoured, with little colouration.

I have patches saved on the GT10 with a code that I can remember: e.g. ST FM RT Clean
where ST (=Stratocaster), FM (=Fender Mustang), RT (= Return to remind me to plug into the effects return not the line input, and the patch name (e.g. Clean).

I have other patches on the FM I use when not taking the GT10 out, but after a few months and a few gigs this is how it works best for me. Pauly.

Hi,

If you are connecting to the effects return of the mustang 3 you are effectively disabling all the amp emulation and tone stack on the mustang. You are in fact using the mustang as a powered monitor. The only knob that does anything on the mustang in this setup is the master volume.

Please note the mustang power amp does not add any coloring to the sound, but the mustang speaker does, as the mustang 3 speaker is not hi-fi, but a speaker for guitar amp, so more than a powered monitor it is a guitar powered monitor. Not sure it is a cost effective solution but if you already have the M3...

IMO a possibly more bang for your buck setup using the same equipment would be to use the GT10 for effects and the mustang for amp emulation where it excels. In this setup chances are you are going to need only a couple mustang presets (one per amp model you use) and you will tweak mostly the gt10 . as an added advantage of this setup, most of the amp emulation controls, including tone and gain have physical knobs on the mustang that you can quickly adjust during gigs

Or just get a Mustang Floor and have the Mustang sounds with your existing amp!
