Is it normal for there to be a volume swell when using model presets as the note decays- this seems to happen with all the models except the twin. The volume appears to swell , develop a touch of digital fizz and then decay to white noise as the note decays. I cant get an interference/white noise free note decay with any model. There are no other sources of electrical interefence in the room and the supply is filtered.

Hey Colos,

That doesn't sound like anything we've seen before. If you haven't already, restore the amp to factory settings. If that doesn't work, try different power and maybe update the firmware.

or maybe try using a different guitar? could a guitar sending a weird signal cause this?

I suspect this may just be to do with your noise-reduction settings. If set too high, as the note decays the NR effect drops resulting in more of the original signal getting through, hence a brief 'swell' type effect.

Try turning the noise reduction OFF. If this rectifies the issue, then its just a case of setting the noise-reduction at a reasonable compromise level for a good balance beteween 'noise-reduction' v 'swelling', or just setting patches with noise-reduction turned off.

A further advantage of turning noise-reduction OFF completely is that your Mustang will be more responsive/dynamic albeit (of course) noise levels may be higher (e.g. on high gain settings).

Rich

That volume swell can also be caused by a compressor in the signal chain. This is especially true if your pickups have a really hot output. The compressor will clamp down really hard on the attack and then slowly release the sustaining note, making it sound like a volume swell. Also, check the Sag parameter in Fuse as it may need to be backed off for the output of the pickups.

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies. The problem is that this effect is happening on the factory presets. I haven't used Fuse to alter the sag, and I generate this with my Noise pedal switched out. To be fair I now only notice this on the high gain models, which btw have a high level of noise associated with them "at rest". Im not sure if this is normal ; I can't remember if they were like this when i got the amp or if there is a problem with a component degrading- turning the gain down on the preset helps solve this.

The state of play is that having done a factory restore and having re-upgraded the firmware I still get this artefact. I might get time at the weekend to setup recording on my laptop and sample this- I just haven't had the time to do this yet. Maybe if someone could point me to a recording of the metal 2000 or American 90s played on factory presets with sustained notes I can tell if my amp is acting the same as others?

The great thing about the factory pre-sets in the Mustangs is that you can tweak & save them all - they're not 'fixed'. Just experiment with the noise gate & save the patch with the noise-gate as you prefer it - lowered, or off completely. The factory sets them at a 'compromise' level that works for most people but unlike the Vox Valvetronix VT/VT+ amps you're not stuck with how they were set.

Reading around the forum a bit more, it appears that there is a "buzz" associated with bass note decay which is what I am seeing- also Alinux has written about "low volume tube break up" which is what this may sound like. I will assume that there is noise on the high gain models unless you set a noise gate or reduce the preamp gain?

I just cant remember what this amp sounded like out of the box!! And if a component is breaking down, then no number of factory restores will get it back to that state!
