Pretty much the topic. I'm looking into getting one, but I don't exactly know what it does. I know it switches presets but do they have to be next to each other?

Also, would my Digitech RP90 work through the footswitch output?

Which foot switch? Which Mustang do you have? There are 3 different foot switches (not all work with all the amplifiers in the series) and they do different things.

In any case, the presets accessed by the foot switches do not have to be adjacent.

You can read up on them in the manuals here (near the bottom of the page):

Not quite sure what you are asking here, but I don't think the RP90 can simulate the Mustang foot switch (if you search previous posts here, some folks have posted alternatives to the 1 button foot switch).

PITA

The Mustang I and II amps use a simple on/off footswitch. This switches between two saved presets. That's all it does. You could build your own.

The Mustang III, IV, and V all use a 2 and/or a 4-button switch. These switches are NOT simple on/off switches. They are actually data interface devices that send a serial data signal over the mono-jack line, so building your own switch won't work for these.

Back to the Mustang I and II, you have to program which presets are set for the switch yourself. The amp will just switch between your GREEN preset and your RED preset. The instructions to do this are included on your Mustang Software CD as a PDF file.

Yeah, FFXIhealer explains it well. I have had a Mustang II since last Feb and the only real disappoint I have with it is the foot switch. I thought that it would enable you to jump to an alternate preset at each preset position but, alas, it only allows you to switch one of two presets that you must configure...

This isn't real useful if you want to have a "rhythm" and "lead" setting for each preset. I made a workaround pedal that sits between the guitar and amp. It consists of a couple of jacks, a potentiometer and a foot switch mounted in a case. It apparently adds a boost but what it really does is add a pad that you set with the pot.

It needs no batteries as it's a completely passive circuit. The most expensive part is the foot switch (if you use an old tuna fish can glued to a piece of old mouse pad for the case). If you build one, be sure to wire it "true bypass".
