Over the weekend I installed the latest version of Fuse and Firmware. However the amp is now muffled and distorted on all presets. During the firmware update everything went as usual.

Since the update the amp has sounded very muffled and distorted (mostly distorted bass). I have reinstalled previous firmware updates (all installed smoothly) and have also restored the amp to factory settings but it still sounds the same. I have also tried reinstalling the factory presets by downloading them from the website but they still sound the same (distorted) as do all the other presets that are stored on my computer (all sounded fine previously).

The amp was working beautifully before the update, now it sounds awful. Can anyone please help?

I'm still trying to sort this problem out but to no avail. I have updated the firmware a number of times using the most recent versions and going right back to version 16 but the distortion is still there. It seems that the problem started after I first installed the bundled firmware which came with the latest version of Fuse.

Wow Linty7, I was kinda combing the board looking for posts like this. Been thinking about updating, but fear creating an issue. I kinda go with the "if it aint broke don't fix it" mentallity. Its meeting my needs as is. After reading your post I'm even more leary.

I wish I had left well alone! I had always updated the firmware as soon as it was available without any problems but this time it's messed up my amp. It was working lovely before the update but you always tend to think it's going to be even better with latest firmware. Now it's unusable. I've tried everything to get it back to what it was before without luck. Now it looks like the only option is to take it back to the shop :(

Hey Linty7,

When you did a factory restore did you hold EXIT while powering the amp on?

Hi Loren,
Yes I did hold Exit while powering on, I've done it a few times in the past so I'm quite well versed with the procedure.

I am now starting to think that maybe the firmware update wasn't the cause of the problem and just a coincidence! Thinking back there have been occasions (not many) when I've switched the amp on and thought it didn't sound quite as good as the previous time I used it. I hadn't thought too much about it because the next time I switched it on it sounded good again. It wasn't bad enough to make me think there was a problem.

Today I took the amp back to the store. They were very helpful and tested it with a new guitar off the shelf and went through many of the presets. Guess what it sounded perfect! So I bought it back home, switched it on, plugged in one of my guitars. It sounded awful again with lots of unwanted distortion and break-up through all the presets, some much worse than others (a couple of the cleaner presets are fairly audible but the bass end is broken up).

So I have given it a thorough test just to make sure the problem is the amplifier. I have tried it with four different guitars and four different leads, two different power leads and power sockets. The problem was still there throughout. So I took the amp to my business premises just in case there was a problem with my home power supply. After testing again the problem was still there, loads of unwanted distortion. It just isn't possible to play a very audible tune through 90% of the presets.

The conclusion I've come to is there is an intermittent fault somewhere within the amplifier. I am going back to the store tomorrow, I just hope the fault shows up this time as I am fast running out of ideas!

What do you think Loren?

Best regards
Linton

Another quick update. I took the amp back to the shop again this morning. They have re-tested it but once again it performs perfectly in the store. I have left it at the shop for a few days for them to see if a fault shows up. They are as bemused as I am. I've tried every variable possible to find out if something else is at fault. Has anyone got any ideas?

I've solved the problem and the answer is almost unbelievable..........

My Mustang II is at the store where I bought it from at the moment for testing. Tonight I got out my old Vox VT30, connected it up and started playing, after a few minutes it started to distort badly just like the Mustang was doing. Now there is only one common denominator ME! So it must be something to do with me or something on me. Then I thought, I had always got my mobile phone in my pocket. I took it out and placed it at the far end of my kitched, whent back into the living room and started to play my guitar, amplifier sounds perfect. Put the phone back in my pocket and the amplifier was distorting and muffled again.

This wasn't the usual pip pip pip stuff you get from mobiles, it was discretely sucking the life out of the sound from the amp!

Why is another matter and it only started last weekend, I've owned this Samsung mobile for about four months!

So if anyone out there is having any weird problems with their amp and guitar, try taking your mobile out of your pocket and moving it some distance away

Wow, that's incredible!

Glad you found the solution, and it is relatively easy (too bad you had to make so many trips to the store). And sorry about that 'phone...

Hopefully if anyone else runs into this your heads up will help them out before they go nuts chasing it down.

I could hardly believe it myself PITA. I can't find anything else on the net about it, just the usual pip pip pip thing. It's just incredible what a mess it makes of your amp, it's not subtle it's drastic!

...and all this time, I thought it was just that my playing (and toanz) sucked.

Now I have an excuse ready the next time the better half asks me to turn it down!

Yes you do PITA, it's her mobile phone that's causing it

Hey Linty7,

What model Samsung phone do you have on what service provider? We'd like to try and reproduce what you're seeing.

Hi Loren,

Sorry for the delay in replying. The Samsung phone model is C3300K on the Orange network in the UK.

To be honest since discovering the cause of the problem I haven't been able
to recreate the effect myself. I had owned the phone for about four months and during this time I had never switched it totally off. Since turning it off, in effect rebooting it, I have had no problem at all. The amp now sounds perfect and back to how it was before, even with the telephone in my pocket. It wasn't just a problem with the Mustang either as it did the same with my Vox VT30!

It was all very weird and something I can't explain. I have searched the net for any more reports on something similar and can't find a thing! Anyway all back to normal now
