Hadn't used the headphones for a couple of weeks and now find that the volume is very low, that is, with amp at comfortable "living room" volume, master 2-3, the sound coming from headphones (both a set of buds and an over the ear set) is barely audible. I have to crank the master to 10 to get volume out of the earphones. It wasn't like that when I first got the amp. Is this settable someplace (don't see it in the manual or fuse software), or do I have a warranty issue?

The jack socket may have become oxidised impairing the signal quality. Try cleaning the socket with electrical switch cleaner (such as Servisol super 10).

Rich

It's brand new (1month old) and under warranty; I doubt it has oxidized in the last two weeks and I'd rather not attempt a home remedy -- there are warranty service centers in my town. Are you confirming with certainty that this is not normal for this model and that there is no setting that controls it? If there is a problem, I will take it in for warranty service. They can decide if a switch cleaner is a proper repair. First, I want to know if I'm missing a control or setting.

Hey Bruce,

It's pretty normal for the headphone signal to be lower than the speaker signal. On the Mustangs here I usually set to Master at 7 or 8 to get a decent volume.

Are you using the same headphones?

At 10, it's still just barely audible, and I've tried it with a couple of different headphone sets. The thing is, it is noticeably different/worse/quieter than when received, and I'm also now getting a distortion, kind of a rattling/buzzing undertone, that coincides with the drop in earphone volume and is worse just in the last couple of days. I've sent an email to customerrelations, but haven't gotten a reply yet. I'm a week outside my return/exchange window with the vendor.

What version of firmware do you have? Try updating to version 1.8 if you don't have it already. Aside from that, restore the amp to factory settings by holding the EXIT button while powering on. If neither of those things work, it may need to be serviced.

Did that on receipt and post installation of the fuse software before doing anything else. Yes, I already restored factory settings. No difference, either in earphone volume or rattling/buzzing. Somewhat surprised to see I received an amp with a mfg date of 11/20/10, almost a year ago in spite of recent order from Amazon, a high volume distributor. Also somewhat surprised that the email I sent to consumerrelations hasn't receive even an acknowledgment yet.

I sent off another email to consumerrelations@fender.com requesting instructions for warranty service as advised by Amazon, where I purchased it, and still have not received a reply or acknowledgment. The distortion is definitely getting worse. If there is some other email address or process for warranty issues, please advise.

Hey Bruce,

I'm sorry that you haven't received a response yet. The guys in consumer relations get over one hundred emails per day so sometimes there's a bit of a delay in response. Your best bet would be to call them directly at the number in my sig. Let them know I recommended that you get the amp serviced.

After a go-around with local warranty service, Fender consumer service confirmed to me yesterday what a Fender tech told my local warranty center a few days previously -- that all the mustangs III and up demonstrate this artifact (fizz), or will, and that they consider this within spec. The service rep said they know where the artifact is occurring, but that it is nothing they can fix and they believe it is not a significant issue for the majority of people who use the modeling effects. He stated that it was within the engineering spec. He conceded that this may make the amp not well suited for acoustic/jazz players such as myself who are looking mostly for good clean sounds. He indicated a warranty swap would not solve the problem since a replacement unit would also demonstrate the artifact, or would develop it. He indicated this has been taken care of on the I and II, although when I visited the local warranty service center, we could detect the artifact on a II as well (although it may not have had the firmware patch). Needless to say, my III is on its way back to the vendor and I'll have to eat the shipping charges and restocking since it the amp did not begin demonstrating the artifact until after the initial return period had lapsed. Too bad, I really liked the design, specs and setup over other options.
