That is normal. Get the guitar plugged in and if it still humming then you can worry :)

A simple rule to follow with amps is that if the guitar is not plugged into the amp, the amp should NOT be powered on...

If the hum is all the time I would also check for a couple more things before taking it back.

Do you have any devices plugged in near it that could be causing this? Any electric/electronic device should be suspect at this point even a cellphone too close to the amp. I would try unplugging anything nearby that might potentially cause the hum. You may also try plugging it in somewhere else in the house.

I would hate for you to take it back, get a new one home and find it does the same thing.

The Mustang I is a great amp so don't be discouraged. I bought one for my daughter last year.

Well the only other thing I found is the cable for the guitar to the amp tend to be loose it pulls out with out trying ,just the slightest tug when moving pulls it out of the amp... :? :?

That could be a problem...

Could either be the cable or the tang of the jack needs to be tweeked..

Either way that could be the source of the hum...

I would take it back on Monday and check both, try another cable in the current Mustang I and if it is also loose see if they will let you try your cable in another Mustang I...

Try changing Presets. Perhaps you have a high gain Preset dialed in.

My MI of 10 months haas recently developed a hum on all presets, I hadn't really noticed when playing will my SG but I recent got an Ibanez SA and have suffered from terrible static noise, touching any grounded metal on the guitar. I had noticed a loose ground wire from the volume pot and had that fixed today but still no joy with the static noise.
Strangely when the tech plugged the guitar into a MI in the shop before he fixed the ground wire there was no hum or static noise with the rig.
When I got home, the static problem had not resolved; I tried different cables and both guitars, it was then that I noticed the hum- worse on the high gain presets but there none the less. I moved the rig to a different room. still no joy.
I am also noticing some sort of signal leakage when there is no input- this is especially noticable on the red British 80s preset, with a faint echo of the effects clearly audible from the speaker.
Anyone got any ideas or is it a trip to the shop again for a warranty replacement?

You may want to try updating the firmware first.

Hi Loren,

I have updated to 1.8 already, maybe I should reflash the ROM?

I have the same problem here. Without guitar, my brand new fender mustang 1 make a hum. With a guitar plugged (an also brand new yamaha pacifica 112V) it's worse.

It's the first time I use and have an electric guitar so I don't know what's normal or not.

I upgraded the firmware to 1.8. I plugged the amp in the middle a room without any other electric device. Selected a clean preset. Switched between the pickups. Nothing improve the buzz.

I noticed that it change with the selected preset, guitar plugged or not but in the later case the effect is more pronounced.

I would prefer to not have to go back to my shop which is at 60min train+20min walk from here. So if you have any tips, they will be really welcome (I cannot try with another guitar or amp or in another place, I may be able to buy a new cable tomorrow)

This may be a long shot, but worth a try. If you have any dimmer switches in the house, these will normally cause an amp to buzz, especially cheap ones. Turn off all dimmer switches and see if it helps. I'm talking about the switches that dim your lights, like dining room chandeliers and other such lights.

NO dimmer switches in my house, but have made efforts to move amp and guitars away from laptop transformers etc and noise is much less. Going to get some ferite cores for the power cord today- can't believe a powercord for digital equipment has been supplied without one!!- These are now standard on all lcd tv's, pc's, games consoles etc.
Am also going to experiment with cores on the guitar leads to see what effect that has.
I have swapped out the supplied usb cable for one with ferrites as well, seems to have made some difference. Also have standard lamps/halogens on when playing not CFL bulbs .
Also in the room is my work network router; laptops connected to router by ethernet cables and wireless switched off.
Finally have a Boss NS2 in the signal chain with the DS2 and wah pedal. Just having pedals in the chain on true bypass helps with the noise.
Every little seems to help.

No dimmer switch here. But I start to think the humming is normal. I tried with an another cable (a really cheap one), it's not better or worse. So I can now at least say that my original cable was not defect and was not high end

Colos, I'm very interested by your experiments, could you keep post here your results ?

I start to wonder if the humming could not be not normal. With every dial at 4 or 5 (also for the guitar volume knob) and the default '57 deluxe green preset, it's noticeable but OK.

For all of you who have this amp, do you have a hum also ? Does it change with the preset ? It's not so loud with the '57 deluxe green preset, but louder with the red one ?

I have really no experience, so any info is welcome !

I have a Mustang I and a Mustang III here and I can say from using them the past year that what you are describing certainly isn't "normal".

Something is going on, either something is wrong with the amp or something is causing interference which is resulting in the hum.
