I thought I would upload this for reference for anyone interested in using the Mustang amp as a preamp. I came up with this configuration after browsing David Bray's website and reading about the "WET/Dry" method (http://davidbrayamps.com/tonetricks.html). On his page he discussed a superior way to amplify time-based effects using a regular solid-state amp as a second amp. I concluded that since the Mustang amp has multiple delay and reverb effects, using this configuration should generate some great tones. No need for a load box and speaker emultors since the Mustang already has these features built in.

Components are as follows.

1. Effects Pedals (Not Time Based Effects)
2. Fender Mustang Amplifier (use "Phones" speaker-emulated line out
3. Bus Mixer with FX Loop and EQ
4. Multi-Band EQ
5. Power Amplifier
6. Speaker Cabinets

I plugged in the multiband EQ into the mixer board instead of plugging it through the FX loop of the Mustang. Plug it into the amp if your bus mixer doesn't have an FX route.

You can also plug in a second amp into the line out of mixer board

Adjust your levels to where you find them satifactory.

There's only one problem that I can see with this setup. If you're connecting the multi-band EQ through a mixer's effects send and return, you will still get the amp's un-EQ'd signal coming in from the mixer's inputs. This a highly ineffective way of using an EQ as the output is only "partially" EQ'd. When using an EQ, the signal being EQ'd should never be combined with the un-EQ'd signal.

The correct way would be to connect the EQ to the mixer's channel inserts (if it has them) or connect the Mustang's headphone output directly to the EQ's inputs. This ensures that the entire signal coming out is being EQ'd and that there is no un-EQ'd signal coming through.

I'm trying to understand the purpose of this setup. Is it so that you can send the signal to the P.A. and to an amp on stage or is it just to increase the overall output of the Mustang by way of a separate power amp and cab?
If it's the latter, you can bypass the mixer altogether. Just connect the Mustang phones out to the EQ and the EQ's output to the power amp. The mixer is just going to add more noise.

This is for anyone interested in using the mustang amp beyond practice and jam sessions and pushing the amps limits for tone shaping. Pick and choose any ideas for your own use.

Pictured below is another variation specifically for recording a mustang amp using both the direct line out signal from the bus mixer in unison with a mic'd amp.

VST's can be used within any capable DAW for EQ'ing. However, having hard wired direct EQ'ing through either a bus mixer or FX loop allows for more tone shaping options that can bring out your sound and be used for gigs.
