How are you fellow Mustang users handling solos? I am just looking for a little boost in volume. I do NOT want to mess with the tone. Would it be better for me to create a preset and assign it or has anyone tried a tube screamer in front of the amp? My favorite preset already uses the over drive so I can't use that.

I just use consecutive patches. That way I don't need pedals and I can get exactly the lead sound I want. Sometimes the lead patch will have the compressor doing the boosting and sometimes I add amp gain.

For a clean boost on my 65 Deluxe patch I use the compressor. That also cleans up nice if I want to leave it on and roll back volume. I play in a blues band, swing and and little more drivin' at times. I use my M3 at practice and can just stay on that patch all night long.

Add a post gain compressor, it doesn't mess with tone at all and if you save the patch with it off it works off the stomp switch in mode 3.

I just figured this out as consecutive patches was confusing for leads( a "boost" button is easier)

I use consecutive patches because the compressor is part of my sound so it's already used.

Yeah just watch the gain. You can overdrive the frontend like a tube frontend. I ran my OCD and Zendrive and Tone Press into it and they sound great going into a clean patch. But for practice it's great to just pick up the M3 with the footpedal stored in the back and my guitar and cord. I get GREAT tones without a pedal board.

For a clean boost, I use a BBE Boosta Grand in the FX loop of my Vox Valvetronix AD120VTX, which works very well indeed - particularly because I can set the BBEBG volume where I want and it's easy and quick to tweak if I need it.

Through the FX loop, the BBEBG does not add distortion ie it's a clean volume boost albeit the tone sounds a little 'bigger/fuller' - perfect for lead solo's where you just want the volume to increase or for 'power rhythms' where you don't want the tone to change but where a volume boost and a bit more 'oomph' is needed.

Placed between guitar and amp, the BBEBG will act as a gain boost and some distortion will be added depending on how high you set the BBEBG volume knob. So it's effect will very much depend on where you place it and (if you have an FX loop) the connection options you have.

Before the BBEBG, I tried a Marshall Blues Breaker pedal set to boost - but it coloured the tone and added distortion.

If you have no FX loop and want a clean boost, your options are:

1. Create 2 patches the same, but with a volume increase on one patch for 'leads', or

2. Insert a volume pedal between guitar and amp, but buy the volume pedal type where you can set minimum and maximum volume levels. So, heel back would be your rhythm level, & toe down will be your lead (or vice-a-versa' if you prefer. Levels can be adjusted to suit, and there's no messing about with guessing volume levels with a 'regular' volume pedal.

Of course if you want to add gain and volume, adding a pedal effect (or a real pedal) such as a tubescreamer, will do the job nicely. But as the original post referred to 'clean' boost, I've focussed on that.

Rich

I use the behringer CS400 compressor sustainer pedal in front of my mustang V and it sounds good, better then the compressor in the mustang,i also use the behringer TO800 overdrive pedal into the front input of the mustang and it also sounds good,it sounds better then the mustang's overdrive, you can buy the behringer pedals for about 24.00 each,a great price in my opinion. Here is a tip,try the CS400 first because it can also overdrive many of the mustang's amp models without an additional overdrive pedal,if you use the mustang's overdrive effect with the CS400 it sounds almost good enough to not buy any other overdrive pedals with your mustang.
