I'd love to moniter my Mustang lll through my external computer speakers (M-Audio FastTrack Pro interface). System Preferences show a signal but no sound. I'd also like to mute my amp speaker. Is this possible or do I have to run a line from the headphone jack and into my interface (which works).

I have an MII rather than an MIII ... but if the MIII works the same as the MII you'll have to mute the amp by connecting your external interface up to the amps headphone out. I dunno if your amps headphone out signal would overdrive the input of your external interface or not.

On my system I use 2 different sets of speakers.

For regular computer stuff such as YouTube my sound card is designated as the default audio device and I listen through my stereo system.

For my external Firewire interface I route the input through whatever software I'm using ... such as Amplitube ... as well as a software mixer ... and monitor via the interface through headphones or near-field studio monitors.

If you have signal going into your external interface ... and your speakers are properly connected to your external interface ... I'd say that the software mixer for your interface isn't configured correctly.

Hey Green Teeth,

Just run the FX send out to the Mustang into an input on your interface. That will allow you to accomplish exactly what you're trying to do.

What is the FX send out? I don't see it on my Mustang I amp, or in a Google search. Is this only on the III model?

Also, what the heck does "Headphone Jack Doubles as Speaker Emulated Line Out" mean? This doesn't seem to be documented anywhere in your literature. Could this be the "FX send out" I'm looking for? Can it be used as an unbuffered line out?

I had hopes of using this amp for direct audio input, without mic'ing.

The Mustang I and II amps do not have any kind of FX loop for you to use. The Mustang III has a mono FX Send jack on the back, and an FX Return jack. The Mustang IV and V have the same FX loop jacks, but two sets each (for stereo sound, one left channel, one right channel).

The Headphones jack doubles as a Speaker Emulated Line Out. Ok, here's where we have to distinguish. A NORMAL Line Out jack would be wired right before the power-amp section that drives your speakers, so you get the same sound that the speaker would get, just without the extra 3,000x power jump in amps so you don't blow whatever sound equipment you try to plug into there. But a normal Line Out is not affected by the Master Volume control. It produces an unmodified sound out to whatever you're recording into.

Now, your SPEAKER, however, IS controlled by the Master Volume knob, right? That's because it controls the Power-Amp section, turning down the power to the speaker turns the volume down and vice versa. Well, if the Line Out is a speaker emulated one, then it too would be affected by the Master Volume. Not sure how they wired that up, but it works. That's really all they mean when they say "Speaker emulated line out."

Exactly.

You can use the headphone jack as a line out as well. The difference is that the headphone jack is affected by the Master volume but the FX send on the higher models is not.

The last tech support comment was that the speaker is affected by the Master volume but the FX send is not, but that doesn't seem to be the case on my Mustang III (v2) because when I turn down the Master volume, I don't get a signal through FX Send. If I turn up Master volume (and the speaker), I do get a signal through FX Send.
