I just came across this amp stand and ordered one. I will give a review after I get it and try it out. The thing I like is that the amp can sit on the floor, and it only costs $20 with free shipping from MF.

I almost bought that one too, JC. Good price but for my purposes, it is a bit less tidy than the Fender system. Also, how does it attach to the amp? I don't see any screw holes on the part that the amp leans on.

It does not attach to the amp... The amp rests on the rubber pad. You can zoom in on the picture at MusiciansFriend and it will show you the same thing... :)

Looks a bit dicey ! (and would only work on some amps depending on the configuration of the back panel ?)

The "Standback" brand amp tilting system is more secure I think (I have one) if you want to maintain some coupling of the amp with the floor - but also more expensive !

I've looked at that one before. Will it work with an MIV?

The amp's weight might be an issue.

However, I believe there are two or three different sizes of 'Standback' available, including a version for larger, heavier amps, and I have seen photos of the 'standard' model supporting a tilted a 4 x 12 cabinet !

It looks ugly to me, I guess to each his own, it also looks a little shaky to me. . . maybe I'm just too old school.

If you mean the Standback is ugly, it is effectively invisible when in place behind the amp. The design cleverly uses the amp's own weight to tension the stand structure and hold it in place.

As I said, there is also a version for bigger amps and cabinets, but the standard version supports my Mustang III without difficulty.

For me the main disadvantage is probably the cost - you're really paying for an idea rather than the materials etc.

I do see what you mean as most people would not see it from the side, which to me looks ugly. I was a little worried as it looks like it might move or allow the amp to fall if the amp was moved wrong. Maybe it's just the way it looks, so what did it cost?

Guys, you need to be clear on this type of stand - it's designed to use the amp as a 'foldback' monitor on stage so you can hear yourself (where it's miked up or DI'd through the PA out to the audience). And to be fair the spec does make that very clear. If that's what you need, then that's great.

But it is NOT the right type of stand to project out to the audience if you're using it as a backline amp with no PA. Here, you need to get the amp well OFF the floor. I'd recommend a minimum height of 18" (but higher is even better). Why? Because your audience needs to hear your amp at 'ear height' - too much angle (as per the stand shown) means the tone will go above their heads. And with only a modest angle, you're still losing tone (& volume) into the floor.

I totally agree. I'm using my amp as a monitor on stage and the amp is miked into the house P.A. We are also using an Aviom in-ear system for monitors on stage. I prefer to hear my amp so I leave one ear out on the side of my amp and the other ear in as a monitor for the rest of the band.

The stand I ordered was just delivered but I had already left for home, so I'll check it out in the AM. I'll let you know what I think of it after I get some time with it.

I think the normal Standback is about $40-50 US

Rockcat

I am fully aware of the differences between the two types of stand, and the implications - I have, and use, both types. I am also aware that there is considerable debate about the effectiveness of the two approaches. My personal experience is that the 'off the floor' type probably does project better to an audiience, BUT it also loses, to my ear as the player, some of the low end fullness that the amp has when coupled with the floor.

Horses for courses.

Well, I tried it out this morning and I have to say I am very impressed. My MIV is very stable with the Hamilton amp stand. I tried to tip it over and I really couldn't. Sure, if it kicked out the stand it would, but it would have to be a very good kick. And to be honest, the way I have my amp setup on stage, no one is gonna be back there to kick it. The rubberized material on the feet hold extremely well to the floor and back of the amp. Would I buy another one, you betcha!

Cool, so what are the numbers? Does it allow the amp to lean at different angles or is it for different sized amps?
