hey folks,

i have the mustang I currently.

i'm looking now for an amp i can use with jamming tracks as i'm moving along the progress ladder of playing elec guitar.

i typically use headphones when i practice to keep the neighbors from howling. so i would like to know if there is an amp that can playback jam tracks of my choosing while i practice along?

hope this makes sense as i'm not even sure how to word it
thx

As you may already know, the Mustangs can't store 'jam-tracks' on the amp, and you can't play them back directly through the amp either - Mustang 'jam-tracks' are really just ordinary MP3 or wav files, and play back through your computer's sound system (although you can run the audio out from the computer into the amp if you really want to hear it that way).

If you want a Fender amp with onboard backing track storage and playback ability, you need to look at the GDEC range, which have onboard jam-tracks and playback as one of their main features.

The quality and number/variety of the backing tracks available 'out of the box' on the GDECs is supposedly much improved on the latest models. Suggest you check out some Youtube videos for an idea of what the GDECs can do.

i'll check out the GDEC, thanks. i'll add, it doesn't need to be a fender amp. all i know is fender for right now.

a good starting place the GDEC. i'll x-ref features.

yeah, the piping back through me little notebook into the Mustang was something i didn't want do to do considering this notebook and its soundcard are prehistoric.

thx

Make sure it's a G-DEC 3 series. Same modeling engine as the Mustangs.

The new GDECs also interface with the Fender Fuse software, so if you've got familiar with/like using Fuse with your Mustang 1, you will still have access to many of the same features with a GDEC.

Instead of a new amp, how about adding a looper to your setup.

Something like a Boss RC-3 will allow you to play jam tracks but
you'll be able to do more than that too.

i use it periodically to change settings add effects. way too slow for me to make use of all the time. it does provide for one (i think) pedal effect which really made my strat sound even better. imho

Something like a G-DEC 3 is way more user-friendly for jam trax. Flip the amp on and start jamming in seconds with your preset tone locked onto that track.

i see the GDec-3 comes in 15w or 30w. are the functions all the same just the wattage is different? and different versions have different "style" tracks & pre-sets?

not a bad price for wither 15w or 30w

Ummm. no it wouldn't work with the USB port of the Mustang.

In the most simple case, you would load your jam tracks into the RC-3 from a computer. The RC-3 connects to the computer with a USB port. You just copy the files you want. Then you can disconnect the rc-3 from your computer. The RC-3 can hold 3 hours of stereo recordings. Then you connect the output of the RC-3 to the Aux in of the Mustang 1. You can connect your guitar to the guitar input of the Mustang. The advantage of this over connecting an MP-3 player to the aux of the mustang is that you have a foot switch to start, stop, restart, or loop the jam track. You can also adjust the tempo a tad but I haven't found that to be too useful.

The simple case isn't really using the power of the looper which allows you to start from scratch, or a jam track, and then dub you're own playing on top of that. You can start using the built in very simple drum machine or your own drum tracks and then record a guitar chord loop and then just loop that while you play or add leads on top. It gives you a bit more creative way to practice than just playing with a jam track. I'm just scratching the surface of what you can do with a looper, do some youtube searches and you'll get the idea.

I mention the RC-3 because that's what I have but there are others.

A looper works best in the effects loop of an amp and the mustang doesn't have one so there are some limitations on switching from recording clean and overdrive parts on the fly but those limitations don't really get in the way of most things that you'd want to practice.

Let me know if you have any questions.

thanks for answering/explaining that. much clearer now.

i now have things to mull over in me mind. costs seem relatively the same with either rc-3 and gdec-3 15w. thx

I have the G-DEC 3 30 and it's amazing for self jamming as the tracks are all live-played and the tones are the equal to the Mustang series so you sound like a guitar god right out of the box. Not sure what you sacrifice in the 15 version.

Of course, you can load in all kinds of jam trax yourself from FUSE. I loaded in all the "King of the Blues" tracks from GC. Great to jam on.

The 30 is pricey so you may want to check into the 15.

that extra $100+ for the 30w is a bit extra for me. the 15w should be fine for me at home + headphones. i've only been practicing for less than a year and just now moving into the realm of "jam-trax".

off to GC now to look at a gdec-3 15w...we'll see
