I just got my kids a new Strat and I was thinking of getting a Mustang I or Frontman 25 for them to use. Any opinions would be appreciated. They are just getting started

The Mustang I taps Fender's newer Cyber II modeling engine (just my term for it). The Frontman DSP uses the old one, which is also in the Super Champ XD, a very excellent amp in its own right. All good amps, but I'd have to recommend the Mustang or the SCXD over the Frontman DSP. The Mustang for its exceptional modeling excellence and the flexibility of its EFX and FUSE, and the SCXD for being as perfect match of the old-school modeling tech with the super warm and saturated tones (and responsiveness) delivered by its 6V6 tubes.

Relative to those 2, the Frontman DSP will come off a little too digitally cold and dead-sounding, with way more limitations than the Mustang. But it does have a lot of bang for buck, not a bad amp for a kid, really.

The Mustang uses the same quality modeling engine that all the Mustangs have, and that thousands have been raving about. So you're tapping into cutting-edge tone-tech for peanuts and the deep and updating FUSE utility goes on forever.

Just meant to say that Frontman is not a BAD amp in the class of a Rogue or First Act.

Kids will learn better and stick to it longer with better equipment.

Make sure kids have LOW-ACTION guitars to practice on. Too many kids get cheap, high-action guitars with heavy strings and they wonder why they can't play for squat with their callous-less fingers. OUCH. While their guitar heroes are all playing super-fast perfect necks with uber low action.

I can't imagine what having an amp like a Mustang would have done for me at age 14. It boggles the mind--lucky, lucky kids to be born into the Gilded Age of Guitar Amps.

Maybe its just me but I honestly can't imagine why you'd want a frontman over a mustang. Unless you're just really on a tight budget. But for me, the extra $15 for improved tone qualilty and all the different amp models & effects is a no brainer.

The G-DEC, however, might be something you'd want to compare.

If a 10 year kid ever talks to me about his amps tone I'm gonna have a hard time keeping a straight face.

Ended getting the Mustang II. Thanks for the input. The kids had it cranked up last night.

Frankly an MII would have made me a better player at 13 because the tones and EFX are so inspiring. Good pick!

All I know is that they have been playing the guitar instead of xbox or watching tv for the last few days, so it seems like a good investment. I have to spend some more time with the amp figuring out all of the things it can do.
