I have finally given up on the mustang series. After getting the III as my first purchase i thought the amp was amazing, so amazing that i upgraded to the IV for the stereo effects loop. And that’s when the problems started. The taper on the master volume was horrible but i could live with that, until i started to notice that between 0-1 only the left speaker was working, as soon as you pass 1 both speakers work. I was used to playing between 0-1 at home because of the neighbors.

And then the on/off switch started giving hassles. Wouldn't switch on, or it would switch on and then switch itself off. I couldn't live with it knowing that at a gig it could switch itself off at any moment.

And so i sent it back to the shop and they replaced it, but i downgraded back to the III because of the neighbor volume issue (found i could live without the stereo loop too!). And part of the downgrade was that i could get a new Roland Cube 40xl with the difference in price. I was hoping against all hopes that i wouldn't get a fizzer.

Just my luck, i got a fizzer. So back both new amp are going. The Cube is going back aas well. The cleans (especially the JC channel) is awesome, but the drive tones are so blatantly digital sounding it was hard to get any inspiration from them. The mustang is a 100 times better sounding.

So for now I’m going to wait and see what happens with the Mustang line. Maybe a better version 2 or maybe a valve hybrid. But until quality issues are resolved I can’t risk it. And with all the courier costs the i had to pay for, i could have had bought a Mustang II. So no more :(

I will miss the Mustang, that is for sure!

Bummer :( They are nice and very worthy amps..if they are working correctly. If I had your problems, I would have to give up as well. Hopefully Fender will make some much needed up grades with the faulty electronics that seem to plague so many of these amps.

I really figured with todays technology, this amp wouldn't be hit with the type of bugs that so many are complaining about. My IV is performing trouble free since I purchased it last Feb..changing presets can be a little touch sensitive to say the least but not with the foot switch. It's a lot of amp for $400. US dollars..at this point, I just want to see how long it will last before it breaks down and cost more to fix it than what its worth

They are brilliant amps. The amp modelling they can do is awesome! Its just the QC that’s a bit of a problem, which I can semi understand seeing as Fender wants to sell the Mustangs at a competitive price bracket.

Another thing I thought that I wouldn’t mind seeing done on a new range of Mustangs, is the ability of the Mustang to better handle overdrive or distortion pedals. I know they can already handle it well by turning the gain way down on the pedal. But if I compare it to my Boss GT-10, the 10 handles external pedals really well, high gain and all. Maybe Fender should increase the ability of Mustangs A/D converter chip etc.

And I must confess. I’m already getting withdrawal symptoms from my Mustang

Hey SirPaddy,

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with your Mustang. Hopefully you can try a new on in the future.
