Hi All
I've had my Mustang II since Christmas 2010, and it has been working fine.
But since the last 2 weeks, a problem developed - The amp plays fine for a while - about (10-15-30) minutes or so, then sound immediately cuts off. Sometimes the amp changes to a different preset all by its self, just before sound totally cuts off.
The highest Master Volumes I use 5-7 but the amp also cuts off at lower volumes 3-4 using overdrive gains 1.5 - 3 .

I did the latest firmware upgrade, and still same problem.
The aux input does remain functioning, and responds to varying the Master Volume control, so I assume The Output stage is not part of the trouble.

I Called Fender Support, They found an authorized Fender service center near me - Ocala Florida, and suggested I bring it there.

When I brought it to the service center in Ocala, I was told, by the Proprietor that,
' All the modeling amps have the same problem that you can't play them loud or the thermistor will shut down the power. '
I told him about the promo - Amped Up And Loud - but he held with his statements that you can't push these small amps or they will break.
I'm thinking to myself can this guy be correct about this ?
Fender would surely disagree with what he was stating.
I Wonder What Loren, or other fender staff would say about this philosophy.

Funny that I had to explain why all my controls were set to zero
( I just leave them because I've already set up all my presets like I want )
Seems to me that He was not too familiar with the Fender Mustang line of amps.

I was hoping that he would open the amp case and look for anything loose, or any other obvious burn damage, or whatever. But I don't know if he will do anything but send it in to Fender for a replacement. I figured that I better leave it since they're an authorized Fender Service Center.
I would rather keep my amp - if it was only something loose, a bad thermistor, or some other simple fix.
The amp was good for over 6 months until this happened - was a Christmas present from my wife ( I'm Crying now !! ) - thought I had a very good little amp - don't know what I may end up with though.
Sorry for the long post - if anyone will chime in maybe to just quench my sorrow, that would be nice.

You're the third person on these forums, including myself, who has the the problem of the darn amp doing things it wasn't asked to do. In your case, it is switching presets. In the other two cases (mine included) the amps turn effects on and off.

Hi emcron

I've seen that thread - ( Mustang II Problems ) where the chorus effect switches on.
I believe that mine was also switching the chorus effect on along with the switching to other preset - then locking up - then requiring to shut down, and wait for cooling to turn on again. Like some kind of thermal problem I suppose.

The problem makes the amp totally unusable for band practices which is a big bummer to me - was nice amp for that - light weight, and good volume for a small amp.

The place I brought it to will probably send it back to Fender for replacement - I wonder how I'll luck out with the replacement - that is somewhat worrisome to me.

Thanks for the reply

I"m sure your new amp will be fine. That particular issue (the shutting off) is one that we haven't seen here before. The other issue ( parameters changing) can be caused by noisy pots. Either way, a replacement is in order.

Hi I have a similiar problem I love the amp and have used it for about six months. I am using it with several pedals. Recently after a period of time maybe 20 mins to half an hour the amp just stops working. The lights remains on but there is no sound. I have checked all leads and have tried different guitars but it definetly appears that the amp is faulty.

Can this problem be fixed or how do I go about getting a replacement. Will a replacement eventually have the same problem.

Regards
Peter

Hey Peter,

Have you tried updating the firmware on your amp? Version 1.8 was released not too long ago. Sometimes even just running the firmware update with the same version of the installed firmware can fix quirky problems such as yours?

If that doesn't fix the problem I definitely recommend that you get your amp checked out by a service technician. Do you use your headphone jack often?

You won't be able to open the firmware file with any program. What you must do is open Fender FUSE and connect your amp. Then you'll need to turn the amp on while holding the save button. This will place the amp in boot mode. FUSE will recognize the amp in boot mode and give you an option to install the bundled version of the firmware or select a downloaded firmware file. Click the second option and browse your computer for the firmware file you downloaded previously.

If you have Fender FUSE 2.4 installed, Mustang firmware v.1.8 is included in which case you can select the bundled firmware option.
