So this morning I plugged in to my MIII, hit the strings on my guitar and the amp was dead silent. Made sure the amp was on (the display functions as it should), checked all my volume levels, turned the amp off and on, made sure the cable worked and was plugged in correctly, and even tried a different guitar. I've got the latest firmware installed, and I did a factory reset for good measure... still no sound coming from the speaker

Am I missing something? I guess I'll be exchanging for a new one tomorrow if I can't figure this out.

Hey Scorpaeon,

Are you getting any sound out of the headphone output?

Yes. I can still hear through headphones. Also, I can still record to the computer through USB.

I usually keep the amp hooked up to my computer with the USB cable. And I keep an audio cable running from the computer to the Aux in. When I want to play out loud, I just unplug the headphones. But to today, for some reason, I got no sound coming from the speaker.

It's possible that the headphone jack is not releasing audio back to the power amp. Try exercising the headphone jack by plugging and unplugging 20 or so times.

Hmm, I thought it might be an issue with the headphone jack. About a month ago the plastic ring where you insert the plug broke off. But the metal clip underneath still holds the plug steady, and I've been using it without any problems till now.

Anyways, I "exercised" it real good. Didn't help.

Well it appears that this is in fact the problem. Probably stemming from the fact that the plastic insert broke off. Funny how the headphones still work though.

I took the amp to Guitar Center where I bought it, hoping to exchange it for new one. They said they couldn't exchange it but they called the service center. Service Center is supposed to email me a UPS label so I can send it in. Kinda sucks I'm gonna have to wait for it to get fixed, but at least it's not costing me anything.

I just hope this won't become a chronic problem, the little plastic part of the jack breaking I mean. Because I use the amp hooked up to the computer with headphones about 50 percent of the time. I'm all the time plugging and unplugging it.

This kind of thing is exactly why I think Fender needs to develop a "Pro" version of the Mustang. One with sturdier components and connectors. The headphone, aux in and USB jacks are all Walmart cheap. Every time I connect mine to my Macbook, I make damn sure that the USB cable is out of the way and cannot be tripped on.

I think the sonics of the Mustang amps make it worthy of being redesigned as a professional level amplifier... tube snobs be damned!

I don't think you need a costly pro version to have sockets that don't break off easily, just a few more cents.

Well, I wasn't thinking of just the sockets. I was thinking of higher grade materials and better construction overall. Besides, to redo the connections will take a bit of redesign - especially if they replace that cheesy-ass mini USB connector for a full size USB "B" connector. Changing from PCB mounted controls and sockets to chassis mounted ones also costs more. A more robust Class D power amp would also be nice. I for one would be happy to pay more for these improvements as there is a sense of fragility in the Mustangs' overall construction.

Keep in mind that thse units are not repared, but replaced.
You'll get a new unit, but it may have the dreaded "fizz".... Hope not though...

And heeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrre we go.

So the service center was supposed to email me a shipping lable yesterday so I could take my amp to the nearsest UPS and send it in. Here we are 24 hours later and no email. :x Now I gotta start calling and bugging them. And since we're heading into Labor day weekend I might as well write off 4 days lost.

I've heard that. But if that's the case I don't understand why GC won't just replace it. Specialy after they dupped me into upgrading the warranty to their "Pro Coverage".
:x :x
As for the fizz, I'm a gamblin man by nature, so let the dice roll.

Captains log, 21 September...

It's been almost 3 weeks since I mailed in my Mustang III to the service center. I figured they'd have to order some parts or something so I kinda expected it would take some time.

I emailed them last Friday for an update... took them till today to give a response. I haven't been up their butt about this because I'm a busy guy, I work long hours, and I have lots of other stuff to worry about too. And I work in the maintenance field so I know how these things go sometimes. People are busy, things take time.

But here's the response I got after they've had my amp for 2 1/2 weeks...

"The technician is currently researching the parts the unit needs for repair"

That's it. I mean literally that's the entire opening, body, and closing of the message.

It's going to be a long winter.

Hi Scorpaeon,

Please email me with the name of the service center and the person you are working with there as well as your amp's serial number and date of purchase. I will follow up with the appropriate people here, and get things sorted out for you. Please be sure to include your Forum name.Thanks.

Cheers,
