Just got my new Musician's Friend catalog in the mail, and saw this ad:

Image

Has a Fender website at the bottom, but there is no information about these on the Fender site that I could find. Is this a misprint by Musician's Friend, or has it just not been released yet?

Could not find anything on the web about it, so I just took a picture of the ad with my phone. Looks pretty sweet!

As I commented on another forum, it will sell for US$30 more than a Mustang I, probably with less power, has less on-board effects and will eat batteries.

How often is an electric guitar player really completely out of reach of power these days ?

I can imagine it being used for street busking, but hard to see where it fits into a marketing plan otherwise.

Looks to me like you could pretty easily do the old "chop & channel" on it and turn it into a pedal. It would probably draw less power w/out driving the speaker.

Of coarse that's just all speculation without knowing more about it.

Actually, I could see this being used camping out or trips to the lake . . .on a boat or even on a bus or RV on the road. Could prove interesting for a small segment of the guitar population.

Notwithstanding the fizz issue, the Mustang amps have been a huge winner for Fender I think, hence the attempt to cash in by widening the range with the bass-modelling Bronco amp, and now the 'portable' Mustang.

The battery power is the kind of thing that looks to have potential, but may end up getting little use. Two years ago I bought a Vox DA20 amp, at least partly because I though the battery power option would be really useful - in two years I never put a battery in it ! (and eventually traded it in for a Mustang II !).

I know what you mean. I bought a Roland Micro Cube a few years back for the cool factor of having a portable amp. To date, I have never used it on battery power - it sits on my work bench where I use it to test pedals I build and work on guitar mods...

Which reminds me to check if I have left any batteries in it that might be a corroded mass by now

This is cool, but all the rage these days are ipads and ipods. I'd like to see a version of Fender Fuse that's compatible with them. That's a pretty portable amp to me.

I've seen Vox DA5s used in all kinds of places, running on batteries. Same with the CubeStreet by Roland. These types of amps sell like crazy. Smart move by Fender, imo.

The fact that they sell well doesn't necessarily mean they make sense, except to the companies that sell them !

I wonder how many of those DA5 amps running on batteries could in fact have been plugged in instead ?

Most folk will plug these amps in where there's power available. But aside from batteries making the amp usable where there may be no available power (eg in the garden/backyard), they have a further advantage - no mains hum/earth loop issues, particularly where the quality of mains electricity/wiring is problematic.

Rich

I see and agree with your sentiment, but just to play devil's advocate:

I think that the type of settings that would necessitate a battery-powered amp (eg camping, boating, RVs) kind of lend themselves to acoustics. They're more intimate settings so I'd imagine it wouldn't hurt to have an acoustic at hand. Fewer headaches than worrying about batteries and whatnot. Maybe if you're on a tour bus or something, I could see it...

I guess that's the point I was trying to make earlier in the thread - that when guitar players 'go bush', the weapon of choice is more likely to be an acoustic than a Strat !

I still suspect that, unless someone buys one knowing in advance of a specific situation in which they will use it, most battery amps attract a price premium for less power and fewer features to an equivalent mains amp, are bought on a whim and end up being rarely used in that mode.

This new mustang amp is over priced for what you get compared to the mustang I, it should sell for the same street price as the mustang I (99.99) or even less in my opinion.

This is the future. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. Mustang.

Value per dollar I think its a still a good deal. And anyone looking for a small, self powered, portable tone machine is going to be hard pressed to find a better deal elsewhere. But I agree on principle. It's a 7 watt amp with a 6.5 inch speaker. Why does it cost more than a Mustang I which is practically twice the amp?
