I have a mustang III, what's the best way to get a crisp clean tone? I've gone through all the presets including the clean one but they don't sound that great.

How about, ’65 Twin Reverb with low gain setting and pretty high volume setting. Turn modulation effects off. Dial the tone knobs to taste.

Fire up the FUSE software, and start with a plain amp. For example the 65 Twin, the 65 Princeton and the AC-30 are good starting points.
Set Gain control not higher than 2-3 for the start, adjust volume with the Volume and Master controls (set Volume not higher than 7-8 for the start). Set EQ to taste (depends a lot on the guitar you're playing).
Put in reverb and modulation effects in the FX loop on the right side of the amp image (effects on the left side are routed pre Gain control, and will add input level, which isn't desired for clean tones).
Don't add too much FX amount, just a tad, as you would add spice to a meal that's already tasty. The sound for the most part comes from the the player, the guitar, and the amp (in this order).

The Mustangs are able to produce great powerful sparkling clean tones, but you have to invest some work with the FUSE software. Most of the factory presets have too much effect, and too high effect levels.

The Twin used as a base for cleans is rather cold, hard, digi and dead-sounding. I prefer to use the DR for BF cleans: a bit warmer and not so obviously solid-state.

The basic Twin is quite good for bright chunk chords, it's a good equivalent of the original, especially with the right amount of spring rev. But when you go to lead playing, the individual notes sound real cold and unmusical. Real Twins are more responsive and dynamic and fall easier on the ear for leads.
