Got a I and a III. Home "Practice" is a term subject to confusion. MI is plenty fine for individual practice in the back bedroom. MIII is obviously way more cool and plenty loud enough for "Band practice" at home, but is bigger, heavier, more expensive, and takes up more space. That said, if I could only have one... MIII. (Though I do love the upper midrange snap of the 8-inch in the MI !).

Had a II went right to the III when it came out. Never had any fizz problem. The III can be dialed in volume wise just as easy as the II. It sounds great at low volumes. I use mine at home while my SCXD sits alone not being played for months. I have a DRRI but prefer to use the Mustang at home for manageable volume. The III is worth every cent the extra bucks. It's my grab and to to band practice too. Love just grabbing the Tele and the Mustang III for a couple of hours of blues! Don't short change your self.

Haha, well, this is intersting.

It seems everyone has different preferences, but I can see that everyone who posted in here is very happy with either their Mustang II or III. That in itself is a very good thing.

I've heard good arguments for the II but also see the advantages of the III. I have both a pc and a laptop at my disposal, so I think hooking it up won't be as much of a hassle as I believed it would be. I do like the idea of being 'future-proof'. Who knows what can happen in a few years, maybe I will need the extra power from the III in that time. But that's just speculation...

I'm still interested to see what people think about these amps, but when I go to the music store next time, I will be sure to try both the II and III, if they are both in stock. I couldn't play the III last time because it was put aside for someone who already bought it.

The two clinchers for me in upgrading from a II to a III were firstly that I can play at the same volume but sound better - in other words the amp isn't straining - while still having somewhere to go volume wise, just in case, and secondly the ability to tone-tweak on the amp itself.

If the money isn't the deciding factor, I would tend towards a III, having owned and played both in the past 3 months.

I think the III has an effects loop - maybe somebody can confirm this, the Fender documentation is just too hard to sort through. Among other things, this would allow you to use a looper so you can lay down some chords in a clean setting and then swith to a distortion setting and play lead over it. At least you could if the effects loop works the way it does on my Mesa Boogie.

The Mustang 1 and 2 aren't ideal for a looper. Still plenty good though, especially since you're just starting to play and you have a computer available to practice with.

At bedroom levels, the advantages of the 12" speaker will still be noticeable but somewhat less pronounced. You can get the MI to sound really full and big at bedroom levels but at jamming levels, it can be too much for the power amp and speaker to deal with. Just for perspective, I've used the MI with a 9 piece funk band with horns. During rehearsals, it kept up... but just barely. I had to lower the bass settings to give it a bit more headroom and the side effect was that it got a bit more shrill. During our concert, it was mic'd so power and volume were never an issue. The reason I got the MII was because I was worried that the MI might not last very long used at those very high levels. Still, I miss it.

O.

I'll chime in here. I'm a brand new electric player and the Mustang 1 is my first amp.

My goal in recent weeks has been to get away from Fuse. You can literally spend all of your time tweaking and choosing different models and effects, rather than learning electric guitar :)

I've settled on two presets and I'm just going to use those two for now. I'm going with the Deluxe Reverb. One with a compressor and one without. Combined with my guitar volume and the footswitch I can leave the damn amp alone and get all kinds of sounds.

I leave a laptop hooked up virtually all the time, I just find myself not wanting to use it or even the dials on the amp. It was fun but now it's a pain. Consider that editing might not be the most important factor for us beginners.

Okay, thank you everybody. I'm going to try both Mustangs in the store for some time, and make my mind up on the final choice then. I will report back on that in a few weeks, so you can expect a late thread kick. :)

I have 3 presets set up on the 4 button switch and usually only use two of those. There is so much to be had with just the vol and tone with each preset. Deluxe and Twin sometimes the Bassman.

I have a M2 great for home practice, also use it for jamming with friends. I thought about getting a M3, but with the fizz problem going on I settled for the M2. Even jamming it doesn't get turned up much so its plenty big enough for now. When we get into the good weather and we move jamming to another spot (big garage on a few acres ) It'll still be good enough for What I need. If we ever get to playing live might be a different thing, but I can always mike it through a PA system. The best thing is its light and easy to move around and has all the effects i need.

Well, I tried the Mustang I yesterday, and I definitely liked the II a lot better. So the I is pretty much out of the question. Somehow I also found that semi-hollow guitars sounded a lot better with the II, where the differences between them with Fender/Squier guitars were a less pronounced.

I also tried a BEAutiful, but dark sounding Limited Edition Epiphone Riviera P93. Unfortunately the previous owner of it had found it necessary to replace the Grover tuners with no-name tuners. That was a real letdown, because the tuners were badly installed and the procedure had left holes on the back of the headstock. I will need to do some bargaining on this one if they want to sell it.

Contenders for my next guitar are now the Epi Dot and Sheraton. I will try some more stuff out, but I think the Dot might become my next purchase.

I use a Ibanez hollow body with my M2, might be worth looking at these as well.

I had a MI and didn't want to spent $300 for all the bells and whistles. I now have an MII and appreciate the 12 inch speaker, the additional power and the simplicity.

I have saved 8 favorite presets to the amber bank. That gives me 16 more presets to play around with. The Mustang amps have so many options, it could be easy to stop making music and just waste lots of time creating more and more sounds.

Either MII or MIII will meet needs. I also enjoy the size of the MII for home use. It is just about the size of the Blues Jr I used to have.

Enjoy the journey....

yes, i know it's pretty late to weigh in on this.
i spent an afternoon playing through a II and a III before deciding on the II. i tried really hard to convince myself to get the III, based on factors like the added power, the control panel, etc. but when push came to shove, i just liked the way the II sounded better. (note: i'm playing harp, not guitar, through them). i also prefer the smaller size and weight of the II, but it was the sound mostly. my other amp, a vox vt30, is also closed back, and that may have influenced me, i dunno.

but i guess my point is that after weighing all of the other factors, what really matters is how you like the sound, so make sure you give 'em both a good hard listen.
