I've tried a lot of low-cost Fender amps, including a Mustang II (which I own) and the Frontman 25r and 65r.

The Frontman amps can't compete with the Mustang series in terms of versatility, but I've found that what the Frontman amps have that my Mustang II doesn't is bass punch.

When you're plugged into a Frontman, and you pick your low E string, you get this nice solid, bassy note. By comparison, the Mustang II (in all the default models) sounds rather anemic in the bass range.

Have any of you Mustang owners been able to get better bass response (punch) out of your Mustangs? I was thinking of trying out a Mustang III to see if it's better in this regard.

Your thoughts and ideas are solicited. Thanks.

I have upgraded from a II to a III in the last few weeks, and the III certainly has a better, more rounded tone and fuller bottom end than the stock-speakered II, presumably because of the bigger, open backed cabinet and the better, Celestion speaker. The extra watts probably help too !

Some posters here appear to have had great success in improving the quality and roundness of tone in the Mustang II by replacing the stock speaker in that amp with something nicer, although of course that voids the warranty and you have to be a bit careful in opening up the closed back cabinet.

I get a very pleasing bottom end from my MIII and a Tele or my Artcore. Sorry, not too much experience with a fullbore humbucker shredding machine. You may also want to utilize your Frontman (if you still have it) in combination with your MII to get a fuller tone. I run a lineout from my effects loop into my MI which allows me a broader sound dispersal and to take advantage of the upper mid-range snap in the MI's 8-inch speaker.

Old guy's cheat: Rather than the floor or on a chair, set your MII on a heavy duty wooden or similar box at least the same size as the amp or larger. This will help with volume and low end if your not afraid to be a poorman (Think bass reflex cabinet). If you want a Poorman's Stack!!!, try placing the above set-up in the corner of the room, preferably surrounded by as many reflective surfaces as possible.

Experiment. You may learn a few things. Just play safely and use protection.

I changed the speaker on my Mustang II that I bought used to an Eminence Cannabis Rex. I am having to reduce the bass tone control not to mention it is louder. So far I love this speaker.
