I don't know if someone has already posted on this, I did a search but didn't find anything. Anyone have luck with recording via USB with Logic (express) if it makes a difference. Do I need a plug-in or something?

Did you install the software? The cd that shipped with the amp.
If no, do so.

Then when you open Logic (with amp usb connected) you should get a message asking if you want to use this interface for recording (Mustang). Click yes.

Or look under settings - audio - input device (choose Mustang)

I'm not on my Mac at the moment so sorry if any of the above is slightly wrong, I'm doing it from memory.
But it works fine. I had more problems turning it off lol as I wanted to mic the speaker.

No plugins are required

Hey baerashbrewer,

You don't even have to install software on your Mac. The Mustang should use the Core Audio driver natively. However, the Mustang is an input-only device. I"m not too familiar with Logic Express but if it allows you to select separate devices for input and output, you should be fine. If you're only able to select one audio device a la Logic Pro 8, then you'll need to create an aggregate audio device.

You don't need to install anything on the Mac. The Fender Mustang amps are class compliant devices, and will be recognized automatically by Mac OS X.

In Logic you need to set the preference for the audio hardware input device to the Fender Mustang Amplifier. This is what the setup looks like in the most recent version of Logic Express (9.1.5):

Logic Express 9 has dedicated settings for input and output audio device. Here I use my Mustang II as input device, and the Mac built-in audio hardware as output.

For previous Logic versions you have to create an aggregate device in the Mac OS X Audio MIDI Setup first, as Loren Howard mentioned already.

Yeah, Express only allows me to select on audio device for both input and output.

It shouldn't: I use Logic Express (LE9), and that behaves in this respect exactly as shown in the screenshot posted above. You need to go into Preferences > Audio > Devices and as you can see from the screenshot you get to choose different output and input sources for audio. If 'Mustang Amplifier' isn't in that list there's something odd about your audio setup, though I can't imagine what. There really isn't any difference at all between Logic Express 9 and Logic Pro/Studio 9 when it comes to this: after all, they are exactly the same core app, it's just that some of the instruments/effects/other modules differ.

I have another issue relating to this; I hope no-one minds the thread hijack. When I take the input from my Mustang II into Logic, having adjusted the gain and volume on the amp to make sure there's enough of a signal there, I find that it's very, very muddy and lacking in edge compared to the sound of the same preset in the amp itself. I'm outputting the sound from Logic through a pair of headphones, but even when I output from the amp direct through the same headphones (rather than the speaker in the amp), it sounds completely different: more open, better dynamics, more alive. So it's not the cans doing this, and it's not a minor difference: it sounds truly dreadful when put via USB into Logic and out again. This is the same whether I output from the Mac using the built-in audio or going through my Apogee box; and I'm doing nothing at all within Logic to process the signal.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I'm struggling to see how I'm introducing anything into the chain which could cause such a massive difference in sound quality between Mustang > Phones and Mustang > Logic > Phones.

Hi

I'm having a similar problem. I'm using a USB cable to connect my Mustang 3 to record into Logic Pro and I just can't seem to get enough volume without really cranking up the amp and this isn't an option given i have neighbours. Same for using headphones. I don't want to go deaf just yet. Does anyone have a simple technique for overcoming this issue?

Thanks

Michael

You can change the USB audio volume independently of the amp speaker volume. You can do this both on the amp itself (?possibly only Mustang 3, 4 or 5?) or with FUSE.

On the amp, press and hold the Exit button, then turn the Volume knob (not "Master Volume"). Nothing on the amp tells you what you've changed, so you'd need to be monitoring the sound level in your DAW to find the right level. By contrast, if you change the level in FUSE, you can see the setting.

Thanks for that. I'll give it a try.
