Hey, all and especially Polishbroadcast!

I went and did it. I put a speaker in the Mustang that's made of "The Wacky Weed"! Haha! Let me know what you guys think and bear in mind that the high pitched whine you might hear is not the Mustang. It's interference from my fridge that's somehow coming through my Mackie Onyx Satellite audiio interface. I recorded the amp in stereo but I still don't think it really translates on a clip. It gives an ok idea of the effect of the open back however, and that's all I can expect of this quick and (very) dirty recording.

The Cannabis Rex is a somewhat darker sounding speaker and I did not modify any of the patches prior to recording to give a better idea of the tonal change. I did afterwards and really do like this speaker. It's described as "smoky sounding" and I completely agree. Feedback, please. Thanks.
Here's the link to the 8 clips - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=363615

I like the difference the Cannabis Rex made! Sounds more defined, but smoky!

Thanks guys. The kooky thing about this speaker is that on clean sounds, it's every bit as jangly and still has some of that top end "sheen" but it completely mellows out on the distorted sounds. I've had to add some treble on the overdriven patches. How dey do dat?

LOL!! Are you putting those patches on FUSE? I am hoping to get my MIII hooked up to FUSE in the next day or so to take advantage of the patches already there.

I haven't had the chance or need to do anything in Fuse since the speaker swap. I should probably back up soon though. I've got a band rehearsal tonight and am really looking forward to how it will sound. BTW, I forgot to mention that when I was recording the new speaker, I had to turn it down from 4 to 3 on the Master Volume - it's definitely louder at 102db@1w/1m.

Hey Orcatraz, do you use your M2 for gigging? If so do you use pedals for overdrive and delay or a clean boost pedal of some sort and is it loud enough?
I'll be using my M3 for a gig this weekend and I have my overdrive on button1 and delay on button2 of the footswitch that comes with it, but i'm considering trading down to an M2 and a couple of pedals if it will do the job.
Cheers

Hi LaCab,
I've always miced my amps so loudness has not been an issue. However, I had a rehearsal last night with the 9 piece horn band I'm in and I had the amp at "4" - plenty loud. The low end coming out of the amp was almost overbearing... almost. I cannot say enough about the Cannabis Rex speaker - it is simply awesome! The stock speaker can get a little shrill at times especially with models like the 57 Deluxe. I tweaked my presets yesterday and was very conservative when I boosted the treble to compensate for the CR's overall EQ but during rehearsal, I had to boost it a bit more. It didn't get shrill or piercing, just sparklier, shimmery and smooth - I love it!

I use one overdrive pedal and a chorus pedal. I still don't feel comfortable using a boost pedal on a modeling amp because of the bad digital distortion it can induce if you're not careful about setting the gain stages properly. I think boost pedals work better on actual tube amps.

Thanks Orcatraz,
How do you boost your volume for solo's?

I listened to the sound files you post and really like the open back Rex sound, well done on your mod! is the overdrive sound from a pedal or from the amp?

Hi, LaCab.
I mainly use a clean sound for rhythm so I just have the overdriven sound turned up more than the clean sound. If I have to, I'll use my Danelectro Transparent Overdrive pedal on the clean preset for a distorted rhythm sound. My main solo overdriven sound is just the amp. BTW, the Dano pedal is the old one that they apparently got sued for for copying some boutique pedal exactly. If you can find one, snag it - great pedal.

I thought about doing this to the III but then was hesitant because it had a 50 watt rating! Do you think it would be unsafe? If yes, a nice warm alternative. This things are famous for warming up solid-state amps and Blues Jrs.

I think it'll be perfectly fine in the MIII unless you're constantly running the amp cranked really high. Just because the MIII has 60 watts more power, that doesn't mean you'll continuously be using all of that power. The Rex is extremely efficient so you'll likely use less of the amp's power to get to the same volume level you were using with the stock speaker. Besides, a single speaker of any type or size can only produce so much sound. It doesn't matter how much power you feed it if it doesn't have the extra surface area needed to produce more sound. My MII with the Rex installed is really loud and I don't think I'm using any more than about 25 watts at my loudest settings. Heck, the thing produces something like 102db of sound from 1 watt! With that said, it will not produce 204db from 2 watts - speakers don't work that way... they can't.

I've got a Texas Heat here I'm going to try in my III when get a chance. I've actually been quite pleased with the stock speaker but I cant resist trying seeing how I have it on hand already.

That's the other speaker I'd considered because it too got great reviews for flexibility. I opted for the Rex because I wanted a smoother high end - with the Rex, I got that in spades!

Funny thing, I've read some not so flattering reviews of Eminence speakers, though not of the Rex or Texas Heat, but some just would not recommend any Eminence speaker. After having installed the Rex, I don't get it. What's not to like? I'm still kinda reeling I'm so blown away.

A student of mine has a modded Blues Jr. (by some "famous" jr. modder, but can't remember the name) with a Rex and the thing sounds amazing, even at low volumes. I try to let my ears be the critics. Saying one speaker company is bad in every amp is like saying that ice cream is always awesome... even with ketchup on top.
