Almost satisfied w/ my mustang. I'd give it a 10 if they'd just fix the clean channel fizz.

Thanks, You and I think somewhat alike! I drew a rectangle on the backside using a square then used an 8" stove top metal ring to do the ends. Then I used a square to just slightly flatten the left and right circular sides by 1/2" at the center point of the end of the circle so it looked closer to yours. My reasoning for using the backside was more of convenience as I could see the lines on the plain wood better than on the black back and glad I did after your comments about the saw teeth. Also, I agree with you about using the nickel. I think it would add to the appearance as well as protect the corners unlike the black that would just function as corner protectors. Is your hole approx. 7 1/2" bottom to top or do I need to make it a little wider (top to bottom)?

BTW: I have not started on the cutout of the board. I thought I would wait until daylight so I could see better.

Ok Gene, I did it! Back Panel finished, stickers re-installed at a higher position like yours. Thanks to your assistance it turned out pretty decent. Now I will take it apart and paint the inside (speaker removed, speaker hole covered and electronics covered of coarse) . I ordered a Weber Beam Blocker from Musicians Friend. Hopefully it will get here by Wednesday or Thursday. I will get some corners as soon as I decide where. Some places have dirt cheap prices like $0.50 each then charge $12-$16 shipping.

Great, Gary! Post some pics will ya?

Cool, man. It looks like the hole you made might be just a tad bigger than mine. How does it sound and how do you like the C-Rex in the open back 'Stang?

I think I'm gonna have to order those two sided corners for mine.

Yes, I think it is a tad bigger. Not sure though. Definitely not as pretty a cutout as yours. I love the Cannabis Rex (once it started to break in). It is better for the clean than the overdriven sounds with boatloads of low end that the cutout helped tame. I mostly use clean but found a couple of overdriven presets that sound really good with this speaker. I have used Weber speakers and like them. I have long wanted to try the Silver Bell. Tell me your impression of the Silver Bell in the Mustang III. I decided to go with Stewmac.com for the corners as I have had nothing but good dealings with them.

I actually quite like the overdrive sounds I get from the C-Rex as much as the clean sounds. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with the Silverbell and I don't own an MIII, just an MII. I did play with a Vox Lil' Night Train Set a couple of days ago and am trying not to let the GAS get the best of me. It would be the perfect studio amp for me. Must...not... buy... GLURGH!

Sorry, now I remember RickR has a Mustang III with a Silver Bell.

I love my Mustang II. For just playing at home I really can't think of another amp I'd rather have. You've got to use Fuse though, if you aren't using it you are really missing out! I bought a laptop just for the amp as I've never had a need for one before. I got fed up of running up stairs all the time to use my main computer.

I have just one little reservation, it's almost too powerful! My perfect Mustang for home use would be somewhere between a I & II. 30 watts with a twelve inch speaker

You must like a lot of overdrive or gain. I mostly use clean tones and like good low end so the Cannibus Rex really fills that bill. With a lot of gain the Mustang II can be a bit much at home.

My Mustang III isn't perfect, but it's *very* good. I only notice little fizzing on the cleanest Fender tones, but it's still better than my Roland Cube 60, which also fizzes on the same low notes. (My Peavey solid state Studio Pro is beautifully clear and deep on those same notes, plugged into the same outlet, same guitar, same night, etc.)

That's right, my Cube is fuzzier on the low clean notes. I guess I'm lucky with my Mustang. I've played it a lot and gigged with it.

I still wish my Mustang were better, and I'd void the warranty in an instant if someone told me where to aim the soldering iron, but last night I was getting some just lovely clean Vox tones that were prettier to me than I've managed from the Cube. So I *am* satisfied...

But if I could clean up the cleans a little more I'd buy another Mustang III tomorrow and run them in stereo.

Peavey makes some good amps. I had a Bandit 112S made in 94. All in all it was a good amp for clean but overdrive not so much. I love my Mustang II so far. Get far more sound possibilities. I put a Cannabis Rex 12" speaker in it. Still breaking it in but the sound gets better and better. It is only a 50 watt RMS speaker so I wouldn't put it in a Mustang. Another person (RickR) on this forum put a Weber Silver Bell in his M3 and likes it. That speaker is rated 100 watts RMS

I think that the presets are there and sound deliberately crappy just to force you to get in there and turn a knob or two. I like quite a few of the sounds I downloaded too but find myself tweaking them in the FUSE software. You just don't get the full picture of what the amp can do until you really get into some deep editing and do a LOT of experimenting. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe III now but, I still use my Mustang I for practicing and my Mustang III for open mic gigs where all I have to do is quickly get on stage, plug in, and play. My singer is an open mic junkie so I have had to do that two or three times a night, going from bar to bar. That would be near impossible to do with the Hrdlx and stomp boxes!

After nearly a year, I'm much less satisfied with my Mustang I than I was when I first got it. Seems to happen with modelers for me. I like the Fender Twin and Deluxe Reverb models pretty well, but none of the mid-to-high gain models really excite me...they are okay, but not great. I rarely play it anymore!

I agree you need to tweak the models in Fuse to get them sounding their best. And I also agree that a speaker change is a must for the MI and MII...I installed a jack to use an external speaker cab with mine, which makes a huge difference (I've used both a Weber 12F150 and a Warehouse ET-65 with it in an open back 1x12...and occasionally plug it into my 2x12 with greenbacks, but the others work better).

However, for mid-to-high gain tones, the Mustang doesn't come near my Marshall JVM or my home-brew 10W tube amp, which is based on a JCM800. And it's not just because it's no longer new...I've had my JVM 4 years now and enjoy it as much as I did the day I bought it!

I've also been disappointed with recording...haven't gotten great recorded tones through either the USB or headphone jack...I get better tones using my Line 6 Pocket Pod or Toneport, but I don't really use them either. I pretty much just stick to mic'ing my speaker cabs when I want to record.

Anyway, I will still plug into the MI occasionally for late night playing...it works okay for that.

Yeah it doesn't do a real great job of re creating Marshall tones or even Vox tones for that matter. It does Fender Amps pretty good tho. The M I is a handy little practice amp, and that's about it (and it allows me to keep my gigging amps downstairs and my back thanks me every day as a result). My M III has a Celestion installed so it does a better job than the M I but, you know only a Marshall sounds like a Marshall. It does the Fender emulations, about as well as can be expected from a modeling amp. I mentioned I now own a tube amp. There is a reason for that. I haven't found a modeling amp that anywhere near approaches the vibe of a good tube amp. But hey, the M III is a real work horse and does what it is supposed do well enough to keep it around.

Since I am not big on high gain and overdrive anyway the Mustang does a real nice job of those Fendery clean tones. Actually a very nice job. The effects are really great sounding. This amp is more than everything I wanted in an amp.
