Thanks, aLinux!
If you're going to spray paint the inside like I did, be sure you mask the electronics really well 'cause I don't know hoe those components will react to the drying agents in spray paint. I actually removed the speaker and masked off the grille cloth too.

What did you use to get such a nice straight cut?

I just used a jigsaw with a fine tooth blade. Just go slowly and evenly and you'll get a straight cut. I used a palm sander to even out the little wiggles. The other trick is to paint the edges of the hole as that does wonders for hiding most of the irregularities.
Man, if I had a wood shop I'd definitely make a whole new cabinet for this amp. Alas...

I have a wood shop and have made plenty of amp cabs in the past. I've been seriously considering a solid pine cab for mine. Unfortunately the one thing I don't have much of is time  I'd love to try a solid pine tweed covered cab.

Thank you! that is the way I would have to do it because of the lack of tools etc. (cut with jig saw then use either a palm sander or fine tooth flat file to even it out. Here's for hoping it looks even close to the job you did. My speaker just arrived. I tried it out before putting screws in place. Sounded great but had to back off on the bass tone pot as it buzzed the cab due to not being fastened down.

I just bought a Mustang 1 and sold a Roland Micro Cube I had. After selling the Cube the Mustang cost me next to nothing and I`m much happier with this amp. It sounds much better and its almost as light which is an issue for me with a back injury.

Nice Job! How did you go about determining the size of the hole and it's placement?

Well... I just kind of eye-balled it. But thanks! I also carefully peeled off the stickers and stuck them back on in a higher location than the original placement. Otherwise they'd have been part of the hole - yuck. I couldn't stand to see the oatmeal color of the chip board so I painted the insides too.

O.

What are your suggestions for peeling off the stickers and did they stick back on or did you have to use an adhesive? I may try to do this Thursday (today now)

I recommend using the tip of an exacto knife to very carefully pry up an edge of the sticker. Obviously, you must be careful not to tear the sticker. Then use a pair of tweezers to continue prying up the sticker - same amount of care is essential. Then, very very slowly, peel off the sticker the rest of the way. It will have a tendency to roll up - don't let it. Temporarily stick the sticker on a clean hard slightly textured (so it doesn't stick too well) surface. My kitchen counter worked extremely well but I first made sure it was absolutely clean. I wish I could think of what the common kitchen counter material is called.

My stickers stuck back onto the Mustang really well. No adhesive needed. If you keep the sticker's adhesive back clean, it should be just as sticky as before it was removed.

Could you be thinking of masonite ?

After thinking about it I decided to not alter the original Back Panel. My reason's are:

A. Didn't want to mess with the stickers and cutout .
B. Keep it where it can be returned to original condition with original stock speaker if I ever decided to sell it.
C. It sounded better with the back off
D. I decided to use some 4" wide cedar I had laying around. I put one piece at the top and one at the bottom. I installed the plug receptacle in the upper piece the sprayed the boards flat black. I love the tone much better. The Cannabis Rex is a tone and volume monster.

Actually, that's exactly how I did it too! It was only recently that I decided that a hole cut out in the original back would look better.

Boy, ain't that the truth! The C-Rex is so much louder than the original speaker (101db @ 1 watt/1 meter)! The only thing I noticed about it is that on slightly overdriven sounds, there's some unpleasantly gritty high end coming from the dust cap area of the speaker. It's not as unpleasant and ugly as say, the fizz coming from a Line6 Pod and in some situations it might even be appropriate but it's not my type of tone for the most part. I actually only discovered it when I forgot to put back the home made "Beam blocker" I'd installed. I can't say enough about the effectiveness of the "Beam blocker" for me. I didn't lose any high end but it seems to have taken all that grit, reflected it back to the speaker and it gets cancelled out. All the high end shimmer and detail in the pick attack is very much intact. I love it!

What is the diameter of the disc on your Beam Blocker and what did you use?
I will probably put some tilt back legs and corners at some point in the future but I am going to make a beamblocker soon.

I used a broken under-counter LED light - one of those battery operated ones that you tap to turn on and off. Took the guts out of it of course and glue gunned all the seams inside so nothing could rattle. it's about 3" in diameter and is dome shaped - perfect for a beam blocker. I also thought about maybe using a small plastic kitchen funnel with the tip cut off... maybe someday when I'm bored. Have fun!
