Hmmm.. I got an idea last night and tried it today. I connected the M5 to my SF Deluxe Reverb speaker and started tweaking the preset #92 towards the real thing. And to my surprise I got close! So I have to take back some of what I said earlier, the modelling is not 50% close - it's 90% close! I got the frequencies spot on but still what lacks is the roundness and spongyness of the rectifier tube.

Maybe I keep the amp a little longer .... :D

I love my M2 - especially now with the back open and the Cannabis Rex installed. As for presets, the first thing I do on any new modeler I buy is start editing. I never even listen to the presets. I do this even at the store when I check them out.

Never judge a modeler by its factory presets.

Why does the open back sound better with the Cannabis Rex than the closed back? Just curious.

My brother pulls the backs off all his little Amps as well, less bass, more treble.... Cannabis Rex, I know nothing about, but everyone has there own ears and perception of sound and
style of playing, so its good sometimes to modify "get lucky", and having tuned in your perfect sound can be an achievement ... A hit n' miss sometimes, but in his case, a hit :o)

Thanks, that is what I needed to know. I like a bit more bass (probably because I play bass also) on my guitar. I don't like a dark tone, just more low end on the low strings along with smooth mids and sweet chimey highs.

Umm guys, I actually get more bass now than I did when it was a closed back amp. I do think that the C-Rex has a lot to do with it.

Question, with back off Does placement of your amp in a room affect how much bass? I have found in the past if you place the amp near but not against the wall bass increases. After reading your post above I am definitely going to try it with and without a back and with 2 boards, one top and one bottom to see what works best.

Yes the bass will increase and especially if you put the amp near a corner. Closed back amps won't be affected as much when placed near a wall but it will when you put it in a corner. Personally, I'm never going back to closed back amps - waaay too directional.

Well those are things to certainly think about especially If it is ever used in a band situation.

Same here. I LOVE the low end bass and chimey highs these MII's deliver. I also get better feedback at very low volume with this Amp (doesn't even bother the other tenants), most likely due to these being a closed back model, allows it to resonate/feedback a little better.

Cannabis-Rex must have lots of low end. Only problem I find with adding speakers is it makes the Amp weigh a ton, but that's depending on the magnet size. Also, being a chipboard constructed cabinet, be real careful, the back adds some immediate support I'll bet, otherwise if you find its strong enough, its a great idea, you could even throw on a small bottom panel or anything to strengthen it further, then throw whatever you like inside the back, pedals, etc., and off you go :D

The Cannabis Rex has a 'healthy' amount of low end that might prove to be too much in a closed back cab, but it seems to be a good balance in an open back one. As for structural concerns, here's what I did to mine.

Nice Job! How did you go about determining the size of the hole and it's placement?

Well... I just kind of eye-balled it. But thanks! I also carefully peeled off the stickers and stuck them back on in a higher location than the original placement. Otherwise they'd have been part of the hole - yuck. I couldn't stand to see the oatmeal color of the chip board so I painted the insides too.

Gorgeous cut-out and paint touch-up, bet it does sound much better now. Hmm, I maybe even do that w/ the stock speaker in, (lighten the Amp up even more) Good idea ~..'

Thanks, aLinux!
If you're going to spray paint the inside like I did, be sure you mask the electronics really well 'cause I don't know hoe those components will react to the drying agents in spray paint. I actually removed the speaker and masked off the grille cloth too.
